One of the things I do when I read a piece of history is to create an interactvie Google Map of it to better understand the events. To date, I have made interactive maps of Darwin's widewide voyage on the Beagle, American Civil War battles, the Battle of Waterloo, the explorations of primatolgist Jane Goodall, and ancient African ruins.

Check them out at MyReadingMapped at http://myreadingmapped.blogspot.com

There you can zoom in on the actual locations described in autobiographies, book on history and even a mystery novel or two. Each map can be view in satillite mode, terrain mode and road map mode. Each location has links to Wikipedia or other source for data and/or photos and each map has a legend that puts events in the proper timeline. And, Google Map will provide the directions to the location.
