View Full Version : The Oxford-English Dictionary Adds '♥' and 'LOL' as Words

The Oxford-English Dictionary just added 45,436 new phrases as words, and among them is the first symbol to ever grace the volume, '♥.'

The tome that often sets the English language apparently likes to stay current (http://techland.time.com/2011/02/28/dictionary-update-welcome-to-english-2-0), adding words every three months. Some frequent online acronyms are also now approved by The Authority, giving instant relief to word nazis during instant message conversations all across the world. Phrases like FYI, OMG and LOL? They're totally legit now.

They are adding such words and symbols to a dictionary? Still would not make it acceptable in more formal communication.

The really annoying thing is that lots of people are going to ask me if I knew that 'LOL' is in the dictionary.

"Did you know that LOL is now in the dictionary lol?"
