Witnesses say about 4,000 people joined the protest, organized by the opposition socialist party. Demonstrators shouted for the government to resign and complained about high prices and low wages.
Earlier this month, thousands of motorists in Bulgaria held similar rallies in major cities, protesting rising prices for food and fuel.
Bulgaria, the European Union's poorest member nation, has been hit hard by the European financial crisis and has been slow to recover.
Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov and his minority GERB party were elected on promises of economic reforms, but have so far have failed to deliver. Mr. Borisov's government has also been plagued by charges of corruption.
