Sicilians require around 20% more steppe admixture to be modeled correctly, in addition to around 15-20% MENA when compared to Minoans. This input probably reached southern Italy and Greece after the Minoans but before the fall of the Roman Empire, 10-15% of which came during the Mycenaean era. I assume the rest is extra indo European admixture. This deep Maniot lacks the extra MENA that Greek Islanders and Sicilians have, but has the same level of post-Minoan steppe admixture as them. This makes me believe that they would truly be identical to classical age Greeks. Regular Lakonian Greeks are not that far off.

I ran the Maniot through various GEDMatch calculators and they are very close to Syracusans, Apulians, and Trapanese, as well as being basically the same as Greeks from the Cyclades islands. I am getting a rough estimate of 90% southern Italian, 10% Ukrainian or Belarusian as a good fit.

Though I think from running their data, that there is likely some admixture from Crete in Mani and they are not "pure" classical Greeks.

Probably minor admixture. They dont require any extra MENA compared to Cretans however. This is why they shift a bit north in comparison.

I also notice the Maniot has elevated "West Med" on Eurogenes, and "Atlantic-Med" on Dodecad compared to other Greek results I have seen.

They are definitely highly preserved.

Do you have Syracuse, Ragusa, or Caltanissetta?

Compared to the Maniot, I think only Syracuse might not need extra MENA to be modeled.

I only have another average for Palermo, 8 samples. They require MENA. If you give me Syracuse kits I can make an average.

Interesting that Campanians do not require extra MENA. And Thessalians are quite Slavic.

I am going to send you some kits from Caltanissetta and Syracuse if you want to model them.
