The following is collection of medieval music I've been collecting (and have downloaded) over the past several months. Sadly there are 3 songs on my computer I cannot yet upload all of them authentic and probably my favorite. The other 2 are from a academic CD on a music class I took.

In Portugal our music used to be like this around the 1200s:

KL4ptkaxXuk

Then it changed to this in the 1500s :

yRMvwn8kEUY

Don't know why the change, must have been a renaissance thing.

Just a few great medieval songs from Catalan-speaking Europe:

- A Vos, dona verge Sancta Maria (To Thee, holy Virgin Mary), poem by the father of the Catalan language, Ramon Llull. Subtitled lyrics.

vCOumLh0KUA

- Mariam matrem virginem. Another great song to the Virgin, this time in Latin, from the medieval Red Book of Montserrat, the holy mountain/monastery/virgin of Catalonia. Subtitled lyrics too.

6bHTGLXx99o

- Amors, mercč no sia (Love, let there be no mercy). A profane song.

VAR15ocucTQ

- Cant dels Aucells (Song of the Birds), one of the best known after becoming popularized by cellist Pau Casals. Its origin gets lost in time.

Tj_7FED3zr4

- And finally the sublime Cant de la Sibilˇla (The Song of the Sibyl) in full, a liturgical drama and a Gregorian chant, the lyrics of which compose a prophecy describing the Apocalypse, which has been performed at some churches of Mallorca and L'Alguer (Sardinia) in Catalan language on Christmas Eve nearly uninterrruptedly since medieval times. It was declared a Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO on November 16th, 2010.

This Roman Chant sounds so much like the Serbian Eastern Orthodox chants. :)

Serbian music includes medieval melodies and are called "root" music, sometimes just instrumental, sometimes paired with singing to produce those distinct Byzantine sounds. Many times it is reflected in traditional Serbian music. Something they retained over the generations.

Polish Medieval Student Song 'Breve Regnum Erigitur'

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKIALcUHw08

Breve regnum erigitur,
Sublimatum deprimitur
Et depressum elabitur
Transmutato tempore.

Puerilem miliciam,
Perargutam periciam,
Regencium industriam,
Hanc eduxit in opere.

Cracoviensem filium,
Fulgentem velut lilium
Ac de numero milium
Cunctis preferendum.

Octo dierum spacium
Hoc sustinet solacium,
Post hoc regis pallacium
Plagis feriendum.

Namque regis elleccio
Fit studii negleccio
Ac desolatur leccio
Tota septimana.

Translation from the Latin:

A shortly lasting kingdom is raised
Extolled, it is lowered
And depressed, it slips away
As time has been changed

Boyish / childish soldiery
Very witty experience
Hard work of leaders
That's what it brought up for real

A son of Cracow
Shining like a lily
Even from thousands
To be preferred to all

In a period of eight days
It maintains this comfort
After that, the king's palace
Must be blown with strokes

To wit the king's choice
Turns into disregard of study
And lecture is left lonely
The whole week

The Comtessa de Dia (Countess of Die), probably named Beatritz or Beatriz (1140-1175), was a trobairitz (female troubadour). She is only known as the comtessa de Dia in contemporary documents, but was almost certainly named Beatriz and likely the daughter of Count Isoard of Diá (a town northeast of Montelimar in southern France). She was married to William of Poitiers, but was in love with and sang about Raimbaut of Orange (1146-1173). Beatrice's poems were often set to the music of a flute.
