I've always liked the lyrics to the first verse of our national anthem.

jAYPN-1Yjt0

"The Star-Spangled Banner" is the national anthem of the United States of America. The lyrics come from "Defence of Fort McHenry", a poem written in 1814 by the 35-year-old amateur poet Francis Scott Key after witnessing the bombardment of Fort McHenry by Royal Navy ships in Chesapeake Bay during the Battle of Baltimore in the War of 1812.

The poem was set to the tune of a popular British drinking song, written by John Stafford Smith for the Anacreontic Society, a men's social club in London. "The Anacreontic Song" (or "To Anacreon in Heaven"), set to various lyrics, was already popular in the United States. Set to Key's poem and renamed "The Star-Spangled Banner", it would soon become a well-known American patriotic song.

The current English national anthem.

MeP220xx7Bs

God save the queen
The fascist regime
They made you a moron
Potential H-bomb

God save the queen
She ain't no human being
There is no future
In England's dreaming

Don't be told what you want
Don't be told what you need
There's no future, no future,
No future for you

God save the queen
We mean it man
We love our queen
God saves

God save the queen
'Cause tourists are money
And our figurehead
Is not what she seems

Oh God save history
God save your mad parade
Oh Lord God have mercy
All crimes are paid

When there's no future
How can there be sin
We're the flowers in the dustbin
We're the poison in your human machine
We're the future, your future

God save the queen
We mean it man
We love our queen
God saves

God save the queen
We mean it man
And there is no future
In England's dreaming

No future, no future,
No future for you
No future, no future,
No future for me

No future, no future,
No future for you
No future, no future
For you

Het Wilhelmus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Het_Wilhelmus)

Usually only the 1th stanza (and sometimes 6th as well ) is being played or sung.

Wilhelmus van Nassouwe
ben ik, van Duitsen bloed,
den vaderland getrouwe
blijf ik tot in den dood.
Een Prinse van Oranje
ben ik, vrij, onverveerd,
den Koning van Hispanje
heb ik altijd geëerd.

Mijn schild ende betrouwen
zijt Gij, o God mijn Heer,
op U zo wil ik bouwen,
Verlaat mij nimmermeer.
Dat ik doch vroom mag blijven,
uw dienaar t'aller stond,
de tirannie verdrijven
die mij mijn hart doorwondt.

if california were an independent state (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economy_of_California#Rankings_from_different_sour ces)...

http://youtu.be/KaQHsWFSiao
On a dark desert highway; cool wind in my hair;
the warm smell of colitas rising up through the air -
up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light.
My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim: I had to stop for the night.

There she stood - in the doorway; I heard the mission bell
and I was thinking to myself, "This could be heaven or this could be hell."
Then, she lit up that candle and she showed me the way.
There were voices down the corridor, I thought I heard them say...

"Welcome to the Hotel California, such a lovely place; such a lovely face.
There's plenty of room at the Hotel California, any time of year, you can find it here."

Her mind is tiffany-twisted; she got the mercedes-bends;
she got a lot of pretty, pretty boys, that she calls friends:
how they dance in the courtyard - sweet summer-sweat -
(some dance to remember/some dance to forget).

So, I called up the captain, "Please, bring me my wine."
He said, "We haven't had that spirit here since nineteen-sixty-nine."
And, still, those voices are calling from far away -
they wake you up in the middle of the night, just to hear them say...

"Welcome to the Hotel California, such a lovely place; such a lovely face.
They're living it up at the Hotel California - what a nice surprise, bring your alibis."

Mirrors on the ceiling, there's pink champagne on ice,
and she said "We are all just prisoners here, of our own device."
and in their master's chamber, they gathered for the feast:
they stab it with their steely knives, but, they just can't kill the beast.

Last thing I remember, I was running for the door:
I had to find the passage back to the place I was before.
"Relax." said the night-man, "We are programmed to receive:
You can check-out any time you like, but, you can never leave."

"Els Segadors" (The Reapers) is the national anthem of Catalonia. It has been an unofficial anthem of the Catalan people since the late 19th century, and the official and national one since 1993.

The song is based on the events of 1639 and 1640 when Catalans fought against The Count-Duke of Olivares, the chief minister of King Philip IV of Spain: the Reapers' War.

Xai1s3l92pY

Catalonia triumphant
Shall once again be rich and bountiful,
Drive them back, those people
So conceited and so arrogant.

A good blow with the sickle,
A good blow with the sickle,
Defenders of the land!
A good blow with the sickle!

Now is the time, reapers,
Now is the time to be alert.
For when another June comes,
Let us sharpen our tools well.

A good blow with the sickle,
A good blow with the sickle,
Defenders of the land!
A good blow with the sickle!

Let the enemy tremble
On seeing our banner.
Just as we cut down golden stalks of wheat,
When the time is right, we shall reap the chains.

A good blow with the sickle,
A good blow with the sickle,
Defenders of the land!
A good blow with the sickle!

Lyrics

Du gamla, Du fria, Du fjällhöga nord
Du tysta, Du glädjerika sköna!
Jag hälsar Dig, vänaste land uppå jord,
Din sol, Din himmel, Dina ängder gröna.

Du tronar på minnen från fornstora dar,
då ärat Ditt namn flög över jorden.
Jag vet att Du är och Du blir vad Du var.
Ja, jag vill leva jag vill dö i Norden!

Translation;

You ancient, you free, you mountainous North
You quiet, you joyful beauty!
I greet you, most beautiful land upon earth,
Your sun, Your sky, Your meadows green.

You throne upon memories of great olden days,
When honored your name flew over the world,
I know that you are and will be as you were,
Yes, I want to live I want to die in the North!

De Vlaamse Leeuw (Dutch for "the Flemish Lion") is the official anthem of Flanders, a region in the federal kingdom of Belgium.

De Vlaamse Leeuw is a strijdlied, a nationalist ‘battle-song’, like France’s Marseillaise. Franco-Belgian political tension in the mid-19th century made the Flemish public mood ripe for such an expression of regional feeling. At the time it was not meant as anti-Belgian (as it often came to be seen by Flemish separatists and their Belgicist opponents), for the ‘enemy’ it refers to is Belgium’s southwestern neighbour France, as in the 1302 Battle of the Golden Spurs.

Around 1900 the anthem was in general use among Flemish militants.

On 6 July 1973, a decree by the then Raad voor de Nederlandse Cultuurgemeenschap (the precursor of the present Flemish Parliament) proclaimed the first two stanzas to be the official national anthem of Flanders. The text and musical notation were officially published on 11 July 1985.

English translation:

They will never tame him, the proud Flemish Lion,
Even if they threaten his freedom with fetters and with shouts.
They will never tame him, as long as a Fleming lives.
As long as the Lion can claw, as long as he has teeth.

Chorus:
They will never tame him, as long as a Fleming lives.
As long as the Lion can claw, as long as he has teeth.
As long as the Lion can claw, as long as he has teeth.

Time devours cities, no thrones will ever last,
Armies may go under, but a people never dies.
The enemy comes marching in; surrounded by mortal danger
We laugh at his anger: the Flemish Lion is here!

Chorus

Only the text above is actually sung on official occasions, not the following stanzas:

For a thousand years now has he fought, for freedom, land and God,
And yet his strength is as youthful as ever.
Should anyone think him powerless, and taunt him with a kick,
Both menacing and fearsome will he rise.

Chorus

Pity the mindless who, deceptive and full of treason,
Comes to pet the Flemish Lion and hit him faithlessly.
Not a single movement he does not see:
And if he feels offended, he will raise his manes and roar.

Chorus

The sign of revenge has been given, he is tired of their bait;
With fire in the eye, in anger he jumps towards the enemy.
He tears, destroys, crushes, covers in blood and mud
And in victory grins over his enemy's trembling corpse.

Chorus

On my way up the mountain this morning I heard this song and thought about this thread..

a6nZBESR0gI

America gets a bad rap for a bunch of stuff. Everyone knows here that there is a problem with the "representation". It's a lot different than it used to be and Constitutionally was supposed to be. Those of us who founded and subsequently tried to secede from this nation are still here. My name is on that Declaration of Independence and some more of mine fought in that War between the States. That pioneering spirit is in many ways unique to us and lives on to this day..

If tomorrow all the things were gone I’d worked for all my life,
And I had to start again with just my children and my wife.
I’d thank my lucky stars to be living here today,
‘Cause the flag still stands for freedom and they can’t take that away.

And I’m proud to be an American where as least I know I’m free.
And I won’t forget the men who died, who gave that right to me.
And I’d gladly stand up next to you and defend her still today.
‘Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land God bless the U.S.A.

From the lakes of Minnesota, to the hills of Tennessee,
across the plains of Texas, from sea to shining sea,

From Detroit down to Houston and New York to LA,
Well, there’s pride in every American heart,
and it’s time to stand and say:

I’m proud to be an American where at least I know I’m free.
And I won’t forget the men who died, who gave that right to me.
And I’d gladly stand up next to you and defend her still today.
‘Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land God bless the U.S.A

Der er et yndigt land
There is a lovely land
Danish lyrics

Der er et yndigt land,
det står med brede bøge
nær salten østerstrand :|
Det bugter sig i bakke, dal,
det hedder gamle Danmark
og det er Frejas sal :|

Der sad i fordums tid
de harniskklædte kæmper,
udhvilede fra strid :|
Så drog de frem til fjenders mén,
nu hvile deres bene
bag højens bautasten :|

Det land endnu er skønt,
thi blå sig søen bælter,
og løvet står så grønt :|
Og ædle kvinder, skønne mø'r
og mænd og raske svende
bebo de danskes øer :|

Hil drot og fædreland!
Hil hver en danneborger,
som virker, hvad han kan! :|
Vort gamle Danmark skal bestå,
så længe bøgen spejler
sin top i bølgen blå :|

Free metrical translation
There is a lovely land
with spreading, shady beeches
Near salty Baltic strand :|
Its hills and valleys gently fall,
its ancient name is Denmark,
And it is Freya's hall :|

There in the ancient days
the armoured Vikings rested
Between their bloody frays :|
Then they went forth the foe to face,
now found in stone-set barrows,
Their final resting place :|

This land is still as fair,
the sea is blue around it,
And peace is cherished there :|
Strong men and noble women still
uphold their country's honour
With faithfulness and skill :|

Literal translation
There is a lovely country
it stands with broad beeches
near the salty eastern beach
It winds itself in hill, valley,
it is called old Denmark
and it is Freja's hall

There sat in former times,
the armour-suited warriors,
rested from conflict
Then they journeyed forwards to their enemies' injury,
now their bones are resting
behind the mound's menhir

That country is still lovely,
because the sea waves so blue frolic,
and the foliage stands so green
And noble women, beautiful maidens,
and men and brisk swains
inhabit the Danes' islands

Hail king and native country!
Hail every a Dane-citizen,
who works, what he can
Our old Denmark shall endure,
as long the beech reflects
its top in the blue wave

Kong Kristian stod ved højen mast
King Christian stood by the lofty mast

English translation by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

1
King Christian stood by the lofty mast
In mist and smoke;
His sword was hammering so fast,
Through Gothic helm and brain it passed;
Then sank each hostile hulk and mast,
In mist and smoke.
"Fly!" shouted they, "fly, he who can!
Who braves of Denmark's Christian,
Who braves of Denmark's Christian,
In battle?"

2
Niels Juel gave heed to the tempest's roar,
Now is the hour!
He hoisted his blood-red flag once more,
And smote upon the foe full sore,
And shouted loud, through the tempest's roar,
"Now is the hour!"
"Fly!" shouted they, "for shelter fly!
Of Denmark's Juel who can defy,
Of Denmark's Juel who can defy,
The power?"

3
North Sea! a glimpse of Wessel rent
Thy murky sky!
Then champions to thine arms were sent;
Terror and Death glared where he went;
From the waves was heard a wail, that rent
Thy murky sky!
From Denmark thunders Tordenskiol',
Let each to Heaven commend his soul,
Let each to Heaven commend his soul,
And fly!

4
Path of the Dane to fame and might!
Dark-rolling wave!
Receive thy friend, who, scorning flight,
Goes to meet danger with despite,
Proudly as thou the tempest's might,
Dark-rolling wave!
And amid pleasures and alarms,
And war and victory, be thine arms,
And war and victory, be thine arms,
My grave!

Danish lyrics

1
Kong Christian stod ved højen mast
i røg og damp;
hans værge hamrede så fast,
at gotens hjelm og hjerne brast.
Da sank hvert fjendtligt spejl og mast
i røg og damp.
Fly, skreg de, fly, hvad flygte kan!
hvo står for Danmarks Christian
hvo står for Danmarks Christian
i kamp?

2
i strid?

3
O, Nordhav! Glimt af Wessel brød
din mørke sky.
Da ty'de kæmper til dit skød;
thi med ham lynte skræk og død.
Fra valen hørtes vrål, som brød
den tykke sky.
Fra Danmark lyner Tordenskjold;
hver give sig i himlens vold
hver give sig i himlens vold
og fly!

4
Du danskes vej til ros og magt,
sortladne hav!
Modtag din ven, som uforsagt
tør møde faren med foragt
så stolt som du mod stormens magt,
sortladne hav!
Og rask igennem larm og spil
og kamp og sejer før mig til
og kamp og sejer før mig til
min grav!

Yep, but notice that I did say the Finlandia Hymn ought to be the national anthem. ;)

)And I guess I should have worded it a little more clearly that it is indeed the official anthem that has the same melody as the Estonian one. Although the Estonian one is a little shorter, which is why they often play it instead when some Finnish athlete wins a medal -- which of course always has sports reporters fuming.)

Yes, I think you should have worded it more clearly, because we don't have an official national anthem. Maamme is the established national anthem.

I was just confused as to why you would post something else than the national anthem in a thread that is about national anthems.

Well, the thing is, I'm a little wary of excessive display of flags, coats of arms, anthems, and so forth.

There's something tinny, something pompous and empty about it. National symbols should be displayed, on the right occasion, proudly and defiantly, definitely so. But for the most part I like my patriotism quiet, unassuming and dignified.

I also like to have a laugh every now and then.

Die Stem van Suid Afrika (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Die_Stem_van_Suid-Afrika)
(South African national anthem until 1994)

jIywZq8GTU8

Eerste vers

Derde vers

These national anthems and these (mostly) beautiful videos provide the best possible reasons why the European Union should not, MUST not, SHALL NOT
homogenise Europe! Shall thousands of years of national cultures be discarded along with the sovereignty of the member nations ?

Has European preservation any worse enemy than the European Union ? Possibly Islam, certainly no other.

----

Our beautiful homeland,
O dear heroic land,
Our fathers' ancient glory,
May you be blessed forever.

Beloved, you are our sole glory,
Beloved, you are our only one,
Beloved, where you are plain,
Beloved, where you are mountainous.

Drava, Sava, flow on,
Nor you Danube, lose your power,
Deep blue sea, tell the world,
That a Croat loves his people.

Whilst the sun warms his fields,
Whilst stormy winds lash his oak trees,
Whilst his lost ones a grave covers,
Whilst his living heart beats.

After considering a number of options, Sovereign Mercia has adopted Tomorrow Belongs to Me as the Mercian national anthem. Note also the Tolkien imagery employed on the video of this version by Saga - Tolkien was a Mercian.

The Frisian anthem: De âlde Friezen

1zNuRmfexMw

Text:

Frysk bloed tsjoch op! Wol no ris brûze en siede,
en bûnzje troch ús ieren om!
Flean op! Wy sjonge it bêste lân fan d'ierde,
it Fryske lân fol eare en rom.

Chorus (2x):
Klink dan en daverje fier yn it rûn,
Dyn âlde eare, o Fryske grûn!

Hoe ek fan oermacht, need en see betrutsen,
oerâlde, leave Fryske grûn,
Nea waard dy fêste, taaie bân ferbrutsen,
dy't Friezen oan har lân ferbûn.

Chorus (2x)

Fan bûgjen frjemd, bleau by 't âld folk yn eare,
syn namme en taal, syn frije sin;
Syn wurd wie wet; rjocht, sljocht en trou syn leare,
en twang, fan wa ek, stie it tsjin.

Chorus (2x)

Trochloftich folk fan dizze âlde namme,
wês jimmer op dy âlders great!
Bliuw ivich fan dy grize, hege stamme,
in grien, in krêftich bloeiend leat!

Chorus (2x)

Translation in English:

Frisian blood, thicken up! Will now rise, foam and seethe,
and thud through our veins onward!
Fly up! We sing of the best land in the Earth,
the Frisian land full of honour and vast space.

Chorus (2x):
Klang then and loudly proclaim it far in it 'round,
Thine old honour, oh Frisian ground!

How also from over-might, need, and sea threatened,
age-old, beloved Frisian ground,
Never have become those steadfast bonds broken,
that Frisians to their land are bound.

Chorus (2x)

From bowing strange, blow by the old folk in honor,
their name and their tongue, their free desire.
Their word was law, right, slight and true they teach,
and opposed to coercion from whomever it might come.

Chorus (2x)

Honourable people of this ancient name,
be always proud of your ancestors!
Remain forever on that high grey stem
a green and crafty flourishing shoot!

Chorus (2x)

These national anthems and these (mostly) beautiful videos provide the best possible reasons why the European Union should not, MUST not, SHALL NOT
homogenise Europe! Shall thousands of years of national cultures be discarded along with the sovereignty of the member nations ?

Has European preservation any worse enemy than the European Union ? Possibly Islam, certainly no other.

LOL @ "thousands years of national cultures". Did you even think about what you wrote here? There is absolutely no excuse for ignorance, with the plethora of information to be found on the net. Did you dwelve into all the information sitting only a click away before imparting your wisdom on the topic of the EU I wonder?

This is one of the few threads where actual symbols of European heritage and culture is discussed instead of the usual fixation on pub-talk along the lines of "oh da J00z", "da Muzzies dis", "da gov'mt dat", "damn da EU". But since you didn't have anything to add to this thread, you felt compelled to go attention-whoring with a fanfare nobody asked for. There is ample choice of threads dealing with concepts of "the other", post your stuff there.

Een Prinse van Oranje

Here is a version with an electric guitar

JdfgG66QpHs

I

Quisqueyanos valientes, alcemos
Nuestro canto con viva emoción,
Y del mundo a la faz ostentemos
Nuestro invicto glorioso pendón.

II

Salve el pueblo que intrépido y fuerte,
A la guerra a morir se lanzó
Cuando en bélico reto de muerte
Sus cadenas de esclavo rompió.

III

Ningún pueblo ser libre merece
Si es esclavo indolente y servil;
Si en su pecho la llama no crece
Que templó el heroismo viril.

IV

Más Quisqueya la indómita y brava
Siempre altiva la frente alzará:
Que si fuere mil veces esclava
Otras tantas ser libre sabrá.

V

Que si dolo y ardid la expusieron
de un intruso señor al desdén,
¡Las Carreras! ¡Beller!... campos fueron
que cubiertos de gloria se ven.

VI

Que en la cima de heroíco baluarte,
de los libres el verbo encarnó,
donde el genio de Sánchez y Duarte
a ser libre o morir enseñó.

VII

Y si pudo inconsulto caudillo
de esas glorias el brillo empañar,
de la guerra se vió en Capotillo
la bandera de fuego ondear.

VIII

Y el incendio que atónito deja
de Castilla al soberbio león,
de las playas gloriosas le aleja
donde flota el cruzado pendón.

IX

Compatriotas, mostremos erguida
nuestra frente, orgullosos de hoy más;
que Quisqueya será destruida
pero sierva de nuevo, jamás.

X

Que es santuario de amor cada pecho
do la patria se siente vivir;
Y es su escudo invencible, el derecho;
Y es su lema: ser libre o morir.

XI

Libertad que aún se yergue serena
La victoria en su carro triunfal.
Y el clarín de la guerra aún resuena
Pregonando su gloria inmortal.

XII

¡Libertad! Que los ecos se agiten
Mientras llenos de noble ansiedad
Nuestros campos de gloria repiten
¡Libertad! ¡Libertad! ¡Libertad!

(English Translation)

I
Valiant Quisqueyans, let us raise
Our song with vivid emotion
And let's show to the face of the world
Our undefeated, glorious flag.

II
Hail, the people who strong and intrepid,
Into war launched itself unto death!
When in warfare challenge of death,
Her slavery chains she broke.

III
None people deserves to be free
If he is slave, indolent and servile;
If in his heart the flame is not burning,
Which was sparked by heroic manliness.

IV

But Quisqueya, the indomitable and brave,
Her head will always lift up high,
For if she were enslaved a thousand times,
Many more times shall she know how to be free.

V
If it will be exposed to ruse and deceit
Unto contempt of a real imposer,
On to Las Carreras! Beler! ...it were places
Where the traces of glory are found.

VI
Where on the top of the heroic bastion,
The word of the libarated became flesh,
Where the genius of Sánchez and Duarte
Taught to be free or to die.

VII

And if an unattended leader the splendor
Of these glorious events could ignore,
One has seen in Capotillo in the war
The flag of fire wave.

VIII

And the fire that lets the proud lion
Of Castilla become stupefied,
Removes him from the glorious beaches
Where the crossed banner waves.

IX
Compatriots, let us proudly
Show our face, from today prouder than ever;
Quisqueya may be destroyed
But a slave again, never!

X
It is a sanctuary of love that every character
Of the fatherland feels alive!
And it is his coat of arms, the right;
And it is his device: be free or die.

XI
Freedom that still rises cool-bloodedly
The victory in her triumphal car.
And the clarion of war re-echoes
Proclaiming his immortal glory.

XII
Freedom! That the echo's touch
While they're full of noble tension
Our fields of glory repeat
Freedom! Freedom! Freedom!

After a great many proposals (including I Vow to Thee, My Country and Tomorrow Belongs to Me), Sovereign Mercia has adopted as the Mercian national anthem the only piece of music that is both famous, and associated specifically with the Midlands - namely Crossroads. This is an instrumental piece, though this does not rule out the writing of appropriate lyrics in the future.

Italian national anthem / Mameli's Hymn

English translation :

Brothers of Italy,
Italy has awakened;
Scipio's helmet
she has put on her head.
Where is the Victory? (ref. 1)
Offer her the hair; (ref. 2)
because slave of Rome
God created her.

Let us unite!
We are ready to die;
Italy called.

We have been for centuries
stamped on, and laughed at,
because we are not one people,
because we are divided.
Let's unite under
one flag, one dream;
To melt together
Already the time has come.

Let us unite!
We are ready to die;
Italy called.

Let's unite, let's love;
The union and the love
Reveal to the people
God's ways.
We swear to liberate
the native soil:
United, for God,
Who can beat us?

Let us unite!
We are ready to die;
Italy called.

From the Alps to Sicily,
Everywhere is Legnano; (ref 3)
Every man of Ferruccio (ref 4)
has the heart and the hand;
the children of Italy
are called Balilla; (ref 5)
The sound of every church bell
calling for evening prayers.

Let us unite!
We are ready to die;
Italy called.

They are branches that bend
the sold swords; (ref. 6)
Already the eagle of Austria
has lost its feathers.
the blood of Italy
and the Polish blood (ref. 7)
Drank with Cossacks
But its heart was burnt.

Let us unite!
We are ready to die;
Italy called

L'Italia s'è desta,
Dell'elmo di Scipio
S'è cinta la testa.
Dov'è la Vittoria?
Le porga la chioma,
Ché schiava di Roma
Iddio la creò.
Stringiamci a coorte
Siam pronti alla morte
L'Italia chiamò.

Noi siamo da secoli
Calpesti, derisi,
Perché non siam popolo,
Perché siam divisi.
Raccolgaci un'unica
Bandiera, una speme:
Di fonderci insieme
Già l'ora suonò.
Stringiamci a coorte
Siam pronti alla morte
L'Italia chiamò.

Uniamoci, amiamoci,
l'Unione, e l'amore
Rivelano ai Popoli
Le vie del Signore;
Giuriamo far libero
Il suolo natìo:
Uniti per Dio
Chi vincer ci può?
Stringiamci a coorte
Siam pronti alla morte
L'Italia chiamò.

Dall'Alpi a Sicilia
Dovunque è Legnano,
Ogn'uom di Ferruccio
Ha il core, ha la mano,
I bimbi d'Italia
Si chiaman Balilla,
Il suon d'ogni squilla
I Vespri suonò.
Stringiamci a coorte
Siam pronti alla morte
L'Italia chiamò.

Son giunchi che piegano
Le spade vendute:
Già l'Aquila d'Austria
Le penne ha perdute.
Il sangue d'Italia,
Il sangue Polacco,
Bevé, col cosacco,
Ma il cor le bruciò.
Stringiamci a coorte
Siam pronti alla morte

Hey, Slavs, it still lives
the word (spirit) of our grandfathers
As long as the heart of their sons

It lives, it lives the Slavic spirit,
It will live for centuries!
Vainly threatens the abyss of Hell
and the fire of the thunder.

Let everything above us now

Let the earth quake.

A rough translation of the No land is alone

It'll always be so that Saaremaa,
will see the shining of the sun setting.
Besides it Hiiumaa
knows the one right nation.

In Läänemaa bird nests
can still be found in the seaside reed,
Harjumaa is still aware of
the birth story of our nation.

I don't want to, I'm not able to leave you, Virumaa!
Only nature, only fatherland knows,
we have to help each other. No land is alone,
don't want to, can't leave you, Virumaa!

Järvamaa isn't in trouble,
when black soil is ready to sow.
Pärnumaa's story of someone lost in the ancient woods doesn't drive me off.

May wise Tartumaa still know
what's a true man's mind.
For how long will Võrumaa
be able to keep on the right track?

I don't want to, I'm not able to leave you, Virumaa!
Only nature, only fatherland knows,
we have to help each other.
No land is alone,
don't want to, can't leave you, Virumaa!

Will it be so that Mulgimaa
won't let itself be deceived?
Has the guard of quiet, Valgamaa,
joined the voices crying out?

When the wellsprings in Virumaa,
keep their clear water,
only then I'll dare to say,
that I live in my own land..

That I live in my own land..

Tartumaa, Mulgimaa, ...-maa -etc the regions of Estonia

I know it's unofficial and whatnot, but I think it's the most moving anthem I've ever heard. There's a certain resigned despair mixed with longing that has always defined the true Scotsman for me, and made the "Scottish" traits of resignation, caution, and frankness cardinal virtues for me.

Anyway, I've always drawn flak in my own family for liking that song better than either of the Irish national anthems.

I have to admit, although it's not a national anthem, I really like Schiller's An die Freude as adapted by Beethoven in his ninth symphony, though I don't necessarily approve of its message.

Of all those in the poll, the Russian wins hands down to me. It has everything an anthem should have. Although you should have made more options available, as the French ones comes second and close. I also like the Canadian one, btw, mainly because of the O Canada part.

For not only musical reasons, I love the Catalonian and European anthems, of course.

I voted for the Star-Spangled Banner, but on level with that is Canada's unofficial--but SO much more meaningful--anthem: The Maple Leaf Forever, by Alexander Muir, 1867

sYJqMUJFY1g

In days of yore, from Britain's shore,
Wolfe, the dauntless hero, came
And planted firm Britannia's flag
On Canada's fair domain.
Here may it wave, our boast our pride
And, joined in love together,
The thistle, shamrock, rose entwine
The Maple Leaf forever!

Chorus:
The Maple Leaf, our emblem dear,
The Maple Leaf forever!
God save our Queen and Heaven bless
The Maple Leaf forever!

At Queenston Heights and Lundy's Lane,
Our brave fathers, side by side,
For freedom, homes and loved ones dear,
Firmly stood and nobly died;
And those dear rights which they maintained,
We swear to yield them never!
Our watchword evermore shall be
"The Maple Leaf forever!"

Chorus

Our fair Dominion now extends
From Cape Race to Nootka Sound;
May peace forever be our lot,
And plenteous store abound:
And may those ties of love be ours
Which discord cannot sever,
And flourish green o'er freedom's home
The Maple Leaf forever!

Chorus

On merry England's far famed land
May kind heaven sweetly smile,
God bless old Scotland evermore
and Ireland's Em'rald Isle!
And swell the song both loud and long
Till rocks and forest quiver!
God save our Queen and Heaven bless
The Maple Leaf forever!

Chorus

I checked "God Save the Queen",which I like, but "Land of Hope and Glory" gives me goose-flesh. I am, in truth, fondest of the TEXT of "The Star Spangled Banner". What a pity that it wasn't set to a singable melody.

If I were to choose a new national anthem for the USA, I would choose, not Barack Obama's choice ("I'd Like to Teach the Whole World to Sing") which has nothing to do with the United States, but, rather, "America the Beautiful" in the familiar setting to the hymn-tune "Oh Mother Dear, Jerusalem" or Materna, NOT the later melody composed in the early 20th century.

While I'm at it, i'd like to put in a good word for the Norwegian national anthem: "Ja, vi elske dette landet."

When a nation is subject to the will of another, it's anthem typically reflects this, since the anthem of such a nation is an act of defiance against the domination of foreign rule. Usually when freedom and self-determination for the nation come, the song of defiance is replaced with a song representing the independence (such was the case with Ireland, from "A Nation Once Again" to "A Soldier's Song").

At any rate, I've already explained why I like Flower of Scotland.

Beorn

When a nation is subject to the will of another

Of all the anthems used by England bar that Union song composed by a Scot, the subject has never been about the Scottish, yet England has been dominated by the Scottish. The Union and the crown, and not one murmur.

I love the Scots, don't get me wrong; but, I look at the surrounding nations which have suffered at the hands of Scottish/German hands and don't see the English creeping in. Yet, the Scots I do.

The Irish were ethnically removed from parts of Ireland because of the Scottish, yet no song about the English. The Welsh, well, they were just fodder in the ranks of the Norman wars of the empire, yet the Scots were simple oiks like the English.

Robert de Brus!??

Wallace = Welshman

Even greater mystery.

As I said, most Englishman just stare in abject awe at the failure of some school in Scotland...Ireland....Wales...Cumbria....Cornwall. ...Scilly....CI...and so on....

I think that a lot of people outside of Norway know that "Ja vi elsker" is considered our one and only national anthem, and many if not most Norwegians would be quick to agree, but actually there's another anthem that was in fact considered the official national anthem, but has since been "taken over" by "Ja vi elsker". The song is called "Sønner av Norge".

Rock/metal version of "Sønner av Norge":
P755i__q320

Old recording of "Sønner av Norge":
FRBdLPwXX5o

Instrumental of "Ja vi elsker":

Personally, I like both songs, but "Sønner av Norge" seems to have more powerful lyrics and a heavier sound to it, while "Ja vi elsker" has a lighter tone to it.

By the way, we nicked the royal anthem from Britain. :D

Turkish National Anthem

some part of it:

Fear not! For the crimson flag that proudly ripples in this glorious twilight, shall not fade,
Before the last fiery hearth that is ablaze within my nation is extinguished.
For That is the star of my nation, and it will forever shine;
It is mine; and solely belongs to my valiant nation.
Frown not, I beseech you, oh thou coy crescent,
But smile upon my heroic race! Why the anger, why the rage?
This blood of ours which we shed for you shall not be blessed otherwise;
For Freedom is the absolute right of my God-worshiping nation.
I have been free since the beginning and forever shall be so.
What madman shall put me in chains! I defy the very idea!
I'm like the roaring flood; powerful and independent,
I'll tear apart mountains, exceed the heavens and still gush out!
The lands of the West may be armored with walls of steel,
But I have borders guarded by the mighty chest of a believer.
Recognize your innate strength, my friend! And think: how can this fiery faith ever be killed,
By that battered, single-fanged monster you call "civilization"?

Russian is my first choice.

Honorable mentions: Portuguese, Nepali

La Marseillaise declassed them all.

Arise, children of the Fatherland,
The day of glory has arrived!
Against us, tyranny's
Bloody standard is raised, (repeat)
Do you hear, in the countryside,
The roar of those ferocious soldiers?
They're coming right into your arms
To cut the throats of your sons, your women!

To arms, citizens,
Form your battalions,
Let's march, let's march!
Let an impure blood
Water our furrows!

What does this horde of slaves,
Of traitors and conspiring kings want?
For whom have these vile chains,
These irons, been long prepared? (repeat)
Frenchmen, for us, ah! What outrage
What furious action it must arouse!
It is to us they dare plan
A return to the old slavery!

To arms, citizens ...

What! Foreign cohorts
Would make the law in our homes!
What! These mercenary phalanxes
Would strike down our proud warriors! (repeat)
Great God! By chained hands
Our brows would yield under the yoke!
Vile despots would themselves become
The masters of our destinies!

To arms, citizens ...

Tremble, tyrants and you traitors
The shame of all parties,
Tremble! Your parricidal schemes
Will finally receive their prize! (repeat)
Everyone is a soldier to combat you,
If they fall, our young heroes,
Will be produced anew from the ground,
Ready to fight against you!

To arms, citizens ...

Frenchmen, as magnanimous warriors,
Bear or hold back your blows!
Spare those sorry victims,
For regretfully arming against us. (repeat)
But these bloodthirsty despots,
These accomplices of Bouillé,
All these tigers who mercilessly
Tear apart their mother's breast!

To arms, citizens ...

Sacred love of the Fatherland,
Lead, support our avenging arms
Liberty, cherished Liberty,
Fight with thy defenders! (repeat)
Under our flags may victory
Hurry to thy manly accents,
So that thy expiring enemies
See thy triumph and our glory!

To arms, citizens ...

(Children's Verse)
We shall enter the (military) career
When our elders are no longer there,
There we shall find their dust
And the trace of their virtues (repeat)
Much less keen to survive them
Than to share their coffins,
We shall have the sublime pride
To avenge or follow them.

To arms, citizens ...

God of mercy and justice
See our tyrants, judge our hearts
Thy goodness be with us
Defend us from these oppressors (repeat)
You reign in heaven and on earth
And before You all must bend
In your arms, come support us
You Great God, Lord of the thunder.

To arms, citizens ...

French people know thy glory
Crowned by Equality,
What a triumph, what a victory,
To have won Freedom! (repeat)
The God who throws thunder
And who commands the elements,
To exterminate the tyrants
Uses your arm on the ground.

To arms, citizens ...

Of tyranny, we have
Rebuffed the final efforts;
It is banished from our climes;
In France the kings are dead. (repeat)
Forever live the Republic!
Anathema to royalty!
May this refrain sung everywhere,
Defy the politics of kings.

To arms, citizens ...

France that Europe admires
Has regained Liberty
And every citizen breathes
Under the laws of Equality, (repeat)
One day its beloved image
Will extend throughout the universe.
Peoples, you will break your chains
And you will have a Fatherland!

To arms, citizens ...

Trampling on the rights of man,
soldierly legions
The first inhabitants of Rome
enslaved nations. (repeat)
A larger project and wiser
We engage in battle
And the Frenchman only arms himself
In order to destroy slavery.

To arms, citizens ...

Yes! Already insolent despots
And the band of emigrants
Waging war on the sans-culottes [lit. without-breeches]
By our weapons are withered; (repeat)
Vainly their hope is based
On piqued fanaticism
The sign of Liberty
Will soon spread around the world.

To arms, citizens ...

To you! Let glory surround
Citizens, illustrious warriors,
Fear in the fields of Bellona,
Fear the sullying of your laurels! (repeat)
As for dark unfounded suspicions
Towards your leaders, your generals,
Never leave your flags,
And you will remain invincible.

To arms, citizens ...

(Children's Verse)
Children, let Honour and Fatherland
be the object of all our wishes!
Let us always have souls nourished
With fires that might inspire both. (repeat)
Let us be united! Anything is possible;
Our vile enemies will fall,
Then the French will cease
To sing this fierce refrain:

To arms, citizens ...

My personal favorite is Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau from Wales. Second?....I've a soft spot for Der er et yndigt land, also, I loathe the Star Spangled Banner. Hail Columbia should've been kept as America's National Anthem, then again, loads of things should've been kept.

I like french, italian and russian anthems. Turkish national anthem is average, both lyrics and music could be better.

Italy

Russia

Bonus

Oldest military band "mehter" sounds way better than our current anthem (although I am certainly not a fan of erdogan's neo-ottoman policy :D).

I always enjoy listening to those on international football matches. Don't really care much about our own.
