Some of these people have known links to Cape Verde -- those with the highest SSA. But there is not one "Portuguese" cousin match on her list with none.

This is how the categories correspond to those on AncestryDNA...

Senegambian and Guinean = Senegal
Coastal West African = Ivory Coast/Ghana
Nigeria = Nigeria/Benin
Congo = Cameroon/Congo
Southern East African = Southeastern Bantu

Almost all of this, is Senegambian/Guinean and Nigerian which is consistent that nearly all Africans brought to Madeira, Azores, and Cape Verde were from Senegambia and Benin. Surprisingly, Angolans and Mozambicans were few and far between.

That CV result is highly abnormal. And no people from Benin were NOT sent to Cape Verde(why are you saying this?).:picard1: That person may have a recent ancestor from Nigeria.
I've actually seen a bunch of updated CV results and they all come extreme high Senegambian with single digit or below 1% of other West African...and those number come from Senegambia. For example, a Senegalese will may have 80% Senegambian and Guinean and the rest being the random West African.

You need to accept the fact Cape Verdeans are entirely Senegambian and Guinean on their African end. Like Cape Verdeans Senegambians are not 100% Senegambian and Guinean in their results.

These are Cape Verdean results...where do you get Benin?

Example 1:

African Hunter-Gatherer
0.0%
Coastal West African
3.2%
Nigerian
0.9%
Senegambian & Guinean
31.5%
Broadly Congolese & Southern East African
0.2%
Broadly West African
2.8%
Broadly Sub-Saharan African
3.0%

Example 2:

African Hunter-Gatherer
0.0%
Coastal West African
6.5%
Congolese
0.3%
Nigerian
0.1%
Senegambian & Guinean
28.1%
Broadly Northern East African
0.2%
Broadly West African
2.2%
Broadly Sub-Saharan African
2.6%

Cape Verdeans results look like those two examples I posted. I know for a fact the person you posted is NOT fully CV.

The Africans in Madeira were almost entirely Senegambian and those who were not, were Beninese. I don't think I implied that Cape Verde has Beninese input, but I did read that something like 10% of slaves in Cape Verde were Angolans, and the other 90% Senegambian.

The only group outside of Senegambia...was some from Sierra leone at very small numbers as the results I posted demonstrate.

I have not seen one full CV in the updates have anywhere close to 1% Congo = Cameroon/Congo yet.
I've gone through about 15.

I also don't think Cape Verde and Portuguese island African mirror each other. Madiera seem to be closer to Sierra Leone. They are intermediates between Senegambians and Nigeria/Benin because of location.

All of the Madeirans' African seems to be coming up as Senegambian. But are you saying it is really Sierra Leonean, and Senegambian is serving as a proxy?

Portugal never had a colony in Gambia as far as I know but I have to check it because we had a total of 52 colonies and it is hard to keep track of them. We had in Senegal, particularly in Gorée but undoubtedly the most established colony on the region was Guinea-Bissau.

Forget about modern day countries...think of them as region back then.
When people from the modern day Sierra Leone are tested, there results are usually part Senegambian and part Nigeria/Benin because of their location. It's entirley possible those result from Sierra Leone rather that of two seperate groups of Senegambians and Nigeria.

Do you see were Sierra Leon is on the map? That population obsorbed "Senegambia" from the north and "Nigeria/Benies" from the east.

Senegambia is talking about regional genetics not countries.

But there is another region between the Senegambia and Nigeria/Benin clusters -- "Coastal West Africa" or as AncestryDNA calls it, "Ivory Coast/Ghana". It seems like the Madeirans do not have any ancestry from that cluster. I would imagine Sierra Leone to overlap with Ghana and Senegambia, not Nigeria.

It all depends how how human flow happened then. I'll give you an example....I've seen the results of two people from Guinea Bissau and they have less Senegambian and more IVC Ghana than CVs...like 3 times more. So this is why you can't take the results literally...as in if there is "Ghana or Benin" it mean that there were some people from there ...no it means that some of the population within in areas share some of the same genetics.

When you look at score within Senegambia. Senegal scores the highest Senegambia and CVs the second highest. Cape Verdeans literally come out more Senegambian than Guinea, Gambians, Malians, Fulas, and so on. This means they descend somewhere in-between Senegal and Guinea Bissau because GB comes in third.
