View Full Version : Haplogroups R30 and I-M438, what can you tell me about them?

I got my haplogroups via 23andme.

Paternal: I-M438 (I-Z17855)
Some have said it's of Slavic origin, on another Anthro forum someone sent me this map showing it's occurance in Greece, but with little context.
https://i.imgur.com/rMHGFKF.png

It seems not so common in the Peloponnese, which is where my paternal side comes from.

Maternal: R30

There is little information about this haplogroup, found this on Wikipedia though.

R30
R30a: Found in Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh (India), in the Tharu people from Nepal and Sinhalese people from Sri Lanka.
R30b: Found in Punjab.
R30* (1598, 16189): Found in Punjab, Nepal and Japan.

I would think R30a would be my best bet, since that region is the closest to where my maternal side comes from, Kerala.

I-Z17855 is part of the I2a-Dinaric haplogroup and so is Slavic in origin, it seems to have a high amount of frequency among Romanians http://blog.vayda.pl/en/i2a-dinaric-subclade-y3120-2/dinc-z17855/ . I don't know much on mtDNA but R30 seems pretty basal

Oh, the map in the link doesn't even include the Peloponnese in the range. It seems it is quite rare for where my grandpa comes from.

It's possible that they may have migrated to the Peloponnese from another region of Greece, or that it is found in very low percentages in the Peloponnese

As Kelmendasi mentioned it is of Slavic origin. However, we know Vlachs absorbed alot of Slavic haplogroups. Judging by its distribution, this particular clade could have been Vlach? Transitioning from Slavic to Vlachic in the middle ages. Purely a guess on my part(due to how common it is in Romania). Could have been Romanian/Vlach/Bulgarian initially. What is your ethnicity?

It's obviously Slavic. I thought I already went over this with you.

Are you that basal Greek sample? It may be Slavic, but considering that sample is basal(if it is you) could have a case of a 'Greek' founder effect like my line. Only way to know that is if you have any matches through your project, to test them for your novel SNPs. It is a process but you can order the SNPs from YSEQ(if your match tested there) Otherwise I wouldn't know how else. My line is most common in Bulgarians, Romanians, Macedonians and Northern Greeks, but I turned out to have a 'Albanian' founder effect. So far 4 Albanians in my cluster, 2 with surnames and 2 from the Boattini 2015 study. TMRCA 1240ypb.

Someone can be a basal subclade and then change when more people were tested. I was basal I1-S2077 and now I am not.

Yes. What I mean is, typically basal clades mean you are negative for all known clades. Of course the more people test that will eventually become refined. Since I tested my matches for my novels now we have a clade defining our cluster(even though its not on yfull). I was suggesting if hes that Greek sample its possible he has a similar occurrence of a founder effect. So if a bunch of Greeks start showing up, then it could be a case where the Slavic settler was assimilated in the early middle ages and developed a founder effect, or "Greek" specific I2a-Din. Kind of like that I-A2512 cluster that is only found in Greeks. Recently I think they discovered the parent clade to it in another Greek which split the clade.

Sure, but I am also curious about any other information I can find out about the haplogroup, as well as my maternal one which I can't find much information on. You were quite vague.

Are you that sample on Yfull? What company did you test with? If you have a Greek founder effect then it could be an early assimilated Proto-Slav that became assimilated by Byzantines. For instance since my 'Albanian' founder effect is 1240ypb, it likely joined Proto-Albanian clans between 600-700AD either directly from Proto-Slavic into Proto-Albanian or from a Byzantine/Vlach into Proto-Albanian and then taking part in the Albanian ethnogenesis. If yours underwent a similar process then as more data becomes available, your matches should be mostly Greek, and depending when you and other Greeks split from a common cluster, would indicate when in time it became part of the Greeks. Considering some of the earliest raids into Greece were around 600AD or so, it could have a similar TMRCA to mine. In my guess it would be the Baiounitai or Berziti Sklavenoi tribes as they were some of the earliest to settle around Albania/Macedonia. In your case(assuming you're from the Peloponnese) your earliest ancestor could theoretically be part of either the Melingoi, or the Ezerites tribes.

That makes sense, I'll just have to wait till testing improves.

23andme is what I used, I made another thread showing my full results, here: https://www.theapricity.com/forum/showthread.php?256656-My-23andme-DNA-results

Nice. I would take the alpha beta at Yseq. It’s 100 dollars and you get matching. You can then join a haplogroup project and assuming you share common mutations they will tell you what SNP panel to order. They only way to establish the founder effect is bigY or fullgenomes though. They can predict if you belong to one with the alpha beta test though.

I2a isn't quite I1, but it's better than R1-monkeys
