I am very curious about this subject , since I am the only (mildly) obese member of my family. There were others, but none of them were overweight before mid life (about the age of 45 or so), which seems more typical. I am very fat, and have a hard time losing weight. I have been overweight since childhood- mainly late childhood around the age of 12 or 13. I put on a lot of weight after my mother died. I have lost weight, since I was my heaviest (305 lbs back in 2005), but I am kind of limbo. Stuck with a muscular, yet flabby frame. I lift weights and count calories. It seems I tried too many times and regained, and now I'm stuck.

My parents were rail thin. How come I didn't take after them? I wasn't adopted. I even have my dad's crooked pinky finger and all. No one else in the family struggles with obesity. Except the usual middle aged spread.

I want to know if obesity is actually our body's default? It seems being lean is almost impossible for most people. Especially to maintain it. It seems as if we are designed to be fat, but I don't see how that would be. I just know when I see a lean person, it almost seems as if that's not the default, but an oddity.

It's impossible if you're fucking eating 3 desserts a day.

What are your predictions from 23andme? That's the test you did if I recall correctly.

i think genetics contributes little to obesity i think like 2% more body fat or like that. at my highest i had close to 160kg thats around 350ibs impossible to attribute it all to genetics in such a heavy case most of my family were lean until marriage and pregnancy and after that a little fat but not morbidly obese im extreme case its because i ate too much i can eat 3 dishes of pasta and 2 slices of chocolate cake for lunch thats really alot

23and me says I am genetically programmed to be LEANER THAN AVERAGE. Shows how accurate they are..

Some ethnicities like Pacific Islanders are for sure genetically more predispositioned to obesity compared to other ethnic groups.

Some families I've noticed have always been "bigger-boned". For example, some Swedish-Americans I know have this heavier bone structure, and I think their body just naturally carries/gains more weight easier than smaller-boned people. Obesity itself is more the outcome of your environment and personal choices imo.

@Richmond, I can tell you have a thicker bone frame, so it's not surprising that you have a hard time with weight. Do you build muscle easily?

I don't go to McDonald's . I do have to admit that I eat at Chick Fil a - some times up to twice a week. Lots of sodium in their chicken sandwiches. They have delicious waffle fries and sweet tea as well.

I don't know what your diet is like right now, but I would recommend intermittent fasting to people of all body types.

How tall are you? I am just under 5'11 and according to BMI I should be no more than 180 lbs. But my Dr says 215 lbs is actually fine for me, since I am bigger than usual.

Is that where you don't eat anything for two days a week or something like that?

Well two days is a stretch. It's more like only eating between the hours of 12pm-8pm or something like that. It will make your body adjust to feeling hungry only when it actually needs food and helps to burn fat you have stored. It also has mental benefits.

This is very interesting as you are really lean. Are your parents/relatives on the heavier side? If yes, then your diet / lifestyle prevented this. Or they got it wrong.

Mine:

Out of your genetic markers for Body Fat Mass

0%
You have a stronger tendency for more fat mass

0%
You have an intermediate tendency for less fat mass

100%
You have a stronger tendency for less fat mass

What leads to obesity?

A Kcal surplus based daily nutrition.

Its really simple.

Richmondbread you can even eat at McDonalds daily and loose weight, aslong you stay below your Kcal burned.

Not sure why people try to make a overcomplication out of it.
