“In late 2017, Vietnam's Ministry of National Defense (MND) said the local industry had developed the capability to produce under license 12.7 mm anti-materiel rifles that have a firing range of up to 1,800 m and can engage light armored vehicles. According to military expert the MND did not specify the type of the anti-materiel rifles to be produced; however, the ministry pointed out that it was of Russian design. The OSV-96 anti-materiel rifles are being supplied to the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN).”

“The MND recently announced the expansion of industrial ties with Russia and Israel in the area of small arms manufacturing. The Z111 is reported to be producing modern variants of the Russian-originated Kalashnikov AKM 7.62 mm assault rifles and the Israeli-originated Galil 31/32 ACE assault rifles designed by the Israeli Weapon Industries (IWI). The Vietnamese military is believed to be armed with battle rifles chambered for 7.62x39 cartridges (also designated M43). According to the open sources, the Galil ACE 32 will be the standard-issue firearm of the PAVN. The Galil 32 full-size assault rifle and the Galil 31 carbine are gradually replacing ageing AK derivatives (including the baseline AK, early variants of AKM and Chinese-originated Type 56 assault rifles). Both Israeli-originated firearms are fed by AK-type 30-round box magazines. Therefore, the M43 will be the organic cartridge of the Vietnamese military - at least, in the foreseeable future.”

“Vietnam is believed to be the second Asia-Pacific nation to manufacture its own variant of a missile based on the Russian Zvezda-Strela 3M24 Uran, an analysis by two military analysts showed recently.

The first nation is North Korea, which has previously shown footage of a missile that closely resembles the Russian medium-range anti-ship weapon, according to Douglas Barrie, Senior Fellow for Military Aerospace and Tom Waldwyn, Research Analyst for Defence and Military Analysis at London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies.”

“Vietnam People’s Navy launched its fifth and sixth home-made Molniya-class missile corvettes this week, local media reports.”

“Vietnam is expected to have a total of 12 Molniya-class missile corvettes designed by Russian JSC Almaz Central Marine Design Bureau. The first two were built in Russia by Vympel Shipyard JSC and delivered in 2007 and 2008.

The contract stipulated that the next 10 corvettes will be built in Vietnam by Ba Son Shipbuilding Company. Each of the ships costs approximately VND3 trillion (US$131.7 million).

The primary mission of these warships is destruction of enemy combat vessels, landing craft and enemy naval forces in both littoral waters and open seas. Secondary mission may include patrolling, rescue, anti-piracy, border protection and reconnaissance.”

The Molniya-class missile corvettes feature AK-176M 76mm artillery gun, the Uran missile system comprising 16 missiles in four launch tubes, the AK-630M 30mm antiaircraft artillery system and 12 missiles for the Igla portable antiaircraft missile system.”

“Vietnam’s license build version of Russia’s Kh-35 anti-ship cruise missile, KCT-15 will be equipped with Russian GLONASS system.

According to Roskosmos agency head Yuri Urlichich, starting in 2023, GLONASS's orbit system will provide high-precision navigation services with six new high-elliptical orbiting satellites, Baodatviet local news daily reported.

"The orbital group of the GLONASS high-altitude orbital space complex, which consists of six spacecraft, divided into pairs on three orbital planes, will form two routes on the Earth's surface. Absolute precision will begin to be provided from 2023,” Yuri said.

Currently, there are 4 global positioning systems through popular satellites such as US GPS, European Galileo, Russia's GLONASS and China's Big Dipper. In that they provide extensive civilian channels and only to military channels for close allies use.”

“Currently, Vietnam has been equipped with the 3M-14TE Kalibr anti-flagship cruise missile version and is preparing to build the KCT 15 anti-ship missile, which is said to be asymptotically functional with the 3M-24UE. Shoot up to 260 km. Therefore, the use of satellite military channels is very necessary.

Recently, the vice-president of the Russian Federation, Yevgeny Bushmin, said Moscow was very supportive of concluding an intergovernmental agreement with Vietnam on the development and use of navigation systems.

"We support the early conclusion of an intergovernmental cooperation agreement on the use and development of the GLONASS satellite navigation system," Bushmin told a meeting with delegation from Vietnam.

This is paving the way for Vietnam to have extensive access to satellite navigation services from Russia's GLONASS network, including applications in the military field, in addition to traditional civil applications.”
