Sunday in the Netherlands, winter 1973-1974, during the Arab Oil Embargo. We didn't ban Sunday driving in the states but many gas stations ran out of gas & limited how much you could buy. It was something of a national panic. I didn't see anything like it again until the panic buying on 9/11.

June 1972. Hanoi Jane (the American actress Jane Fonda) visits North Vietnam.

Striking workers, United States. Clashes with police. That is all that comes to mind. Late-20's?Not striking workers, or not exactly, but it's on the right track. What year exactly?

EDIT: Oops, the Lawspeaker got it :D. [How he could make out that the Capitol is in the background (if it is) I can not know.] I don't know if that's the right date, because the "Bonus Army" was camped in Washington for months. But it was definitely 1932.

The Bonus Army was a group of thousands of Great War veterans who were unemployed during the worst of the depression, and who came from all parts of the U.S. to demonstrate for veterans' payments owed to them. That photo is of some local police "inspecting" their shantytown camp.

After months of pressure and daily demonstrations, the U.S. congress voted against a bill to pay them, and then many of the Bonsu Army men went home. Those who stayed kept protesting, and eventually the police burned their camp down and they too left. Another version of the Bonus Army bill was finally passed in 1936 with a supermajority of Congress (FDR vetoe'd the bill, but 2/3rds voted for, so it overrided the veto).

...Lawspeaker's turn again.

Whoops :(

Mobilization in a neutral country occurred three days before the German-Polish fighting began, that's interesting. (Then again the USA was in wartime mobilization many months before Pearl Harbor; to say nothing of Lend-Lease). I guess that explains why they're so relaxed and had no guns, there was no war on yet :D

The German-Polish crisis had been lingering for most of the summer (as far as I know) so our government decided to play safe as France and Britain had clearly allied themselves with Poland. The government realised that we would end up positioned between the belligerent parties and decided to give the order in order to protect our neutrality.
