If not the leadership of the US (and the rest of NATO), mainly via deterrence (but also arguably through the promotion of liberal democracy), what would your ideal war prevention mechanism be to prevent an outbreak of any major conflict in the world?

Politics, as a phenomenon, needs replacing with another phenomenon.

Simple: MAD (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mutual_assured_destruction). And, being overall, armed to the teeth. The world is like a neighborhood that is full of dangerous street gangs and you just have to make sure that you're the biggest and meanest motherfucker on the block so nobody will dare to come mess with you. Samson Option and all. It's the only way.

There's no way to prevent all wars. They're part of human nature. If there were no modern weapons mankind would just go back to fighting with swords or clubs.

Which would Be better

At least the number of dead people wouldn't Be as huge as with bombs and less innocent people dying in the war.

I actually don't agree with you: until the 20th century, warfare was such a common occurrence that every generation witnessed at least one mayor war. It's only now with the full destructive force of modern weaponry that people, here in the West, would think twice about going to war. Nuclear weapons are the best guarantee for peace. May we build some more ! If people understand that going to war means being blown apart by all sorts of weapons that also blow up the whole planet as we know it, they might be more interested in the diplomatic approach.

Aye. But they won't. Because then they get blown up as well. Human beings are stupid, but not completely suicidal.

Believe me that a war fought with archaic weapons was more brutal than any war fought with weapons designed to be effective killing machines.

I rather get shot instead of being torn appart by mongols.

None.

Nukes prevent all-out war; if you can cut off the nukes, you can invade and genocide. Nukes are the reason we aren't dead in some field. The fact that America, UK, and France have nukes keep the peace. If it wasn't for them having nukes all those psychotic trigger happy lunatic nations would have blown each other to smithereens by now.
