If you see an emerging country become a threat then all you need to do is drop a couple bombs then the country is sent back to the stone age. It works the other way around, the most mightiest country is not invulnerable to bombs and catastrophes of proportions unseen.

So, I ask you, is power, in today's world unlike the medieval era a flimsy concept because power is so difficult to gain and yet so easy to take away?

Yes, especially if any non-Western country makes a move, the west will interfere (well, apart from in China or Russia that is).
It is hard for any country to have hegemony when the whole world is against any sort of power struggles.
