I know there are a lot of different DNA companies like Ancestry, 23andme, Gedmatch, and FamilyTree. Which one is the best for someone who just wants it for fun, and not for any serious science research?

If you interested with Haplgroups, take 23andme. If you just interested with autosomal take Ancestry. Don't take FTDNA or MyHeritage.

You can upload your raw data to gedmatch afterwards, it is free.

23andme doesn't do autosomal?

23andme is doing autosomal, ydna and mtdna. But Ancestry's autosomal is more accurate as far as i observed but they are not doing y or mtdna. 23andme is good at autosomal too.

1. 23andme and Ancestry
2. LivingDNA
3. FTDNA
4. MyHeritage
5. NatGeo

This is my list.

Thanks - I guess it comes down to whichever one my dad can get a better deal on.

FTDNA at the moment is only 39$ and it's raw data is one of the best.
It's absolutely a bargain, overall the best deal at the moment!
There is no point at buying 23andMe and spend more money in order to know your haplogroup.
If you are interested in haplogroups you need to get more in depth tests such as y-67 str or BIG 500 or some of the same tests in YSEQ

it's raw data is one of the best but not much difference with the others. Perhaps 1% in Gedmatch. It's autosomal result is trash, but yes very cheap with discount.

You don't need the results of the commercial calculator, anyway it's shitty and with every company.
What you need is the raw data, than upload to Gedmatch, use some DIY calculator or give your coordinates to Lukasz and you will find out what your made off.
And most importantly, your matches...
You get all that for only 39$.
My advice, go with FTDNA.

True. My FTDNA commercial results are 99% Eastern Euro:) Not very informative but it doesn't have any meaning. As ***** said you can do wonders with raw file in Gedmatch and other calcs later. Most people don't treat commerical results seriously.
And FTDNA is the best when you want establish specific subclade of Y-DNA or mtDNA. Matches list for autosomal and haplogroups is also great benefit.

V5 chip in 23&me (also LivingDNA) has only about 50 000 common snps with Gedmatch or DIY calculators so comparing to FTDNA, Ancestry or even MyHeritage is about 1/3.

I've done 23andme and AncestryDNA. Unless you can convert the V5 to V3, I would just stick with ancestryDNA. My results were interesting to me and the raw data is better.

I believe the commercial results are just as important as the calculators. Everything needs to be looked at as a whole though, kind of like one big picture.

Every test/calculator has it's flaws.

AncestryDNA or 23andMe are the best ones.

I checked after reading this, got excited and ordered one myself because of how good the price was lol

I went with Ancestry, it was the large database that really convinced me.

23andme is a good choice

Yep, with the exception of a potential great-great-great-great Armenian grandfather lmao.

And have you done multiple commercial tests? I'm asking because I'm 100% Greek and not sure AncestryDNA will show me anything different than I have seen on My Heritage and Gedmatch lol

I haven't done multiple commercial tests and tbh I wouldn't reccomend it unless you wanna blow the cash on more or less the same shit. If you are interested in geneaology then Ancestry is very good but in terms of autosomal idk I think they have genetic communities for Greek people but I don't think it's that extensive.

Thanks yeah makes sense. It might be worth it only for the DNA relatives, and maybe finding out more details through them maybe

Given that you are Northwestern European, I'd recommend Ancestry or 23andme. FTDNA is not universally bad, for us Eastern Europeans it's okay.
