Why do gym teachers make us have special uniforms for gym class?

Back in elementary school, we just did gym in our normal clothes. But ever since middle school began, we've had to wear special gym uniforms that we keep in lockers in a gym locker room. I've asked gym teachers why, and they've just said that that's the school rules. But why is it a rule? I could never figure this out

We didn't have to. Might be a thing in private schools to avoid kids wearing the wrong kind of clothing idk? Maybe they want everyone to look uniform when they play sports cuz colors are distracting?
