i'm opening this thread after a request received yesterday by an user of apricity! :D

every town, also the least populated village, in Sardinia has got own traditional costume! these costumes are today dressed during folk festivals, but it's not rare see aged people dressing them daily.

Dunno if it's only me, but I find women in folk costumes much sexier than with pan-Western clothes. Very nice dresses and excellent thread.

The Sardo-Catalan one shows more similarities with those of the Catalan Islands of Majorca and Minorca, which is probably where the settlers of L'Algher came from.

These pictures have been a revelation to me. I had no idea that the folk costumes of Sardegna were so colourful or that the Sardinians are such handsome people. The women are especially beautiful.

To my eyes, at least, the woman in the third photograph in the first set bears a remarkable resemblance to actress Myrna Loy, of whom I always thought that she had an exotic look. She was also a thrillng actress.

Like most Americans, I know almost nothing about Sardegna. On the basis of these photographs, I feel moved to say "O brave new world that has such people in it !"

It seems that Sardinia has a very strong preservation of the very ancient Mediterranean head-covering tradition which I think is widespread all the way from Iberia to the Levant. :). I notice differences among the regions in whether or not they tie the scarf and also how they tie it.

all these costumes were designed before 20th century

these are not costumes but carnival masks.
great part of sardinian carnival masks have pre-roman origin, and are related with agro-pastoral life, they are the personification of fears of population, they represent ghosts, pagan spirits, the death, the savage beasts, the invasors come from the sea, the famines, the pestilences, etc....so Sardinian carnival was a way to exorcize the fears, for this reason the masks have monstrous and scary aspect.

Other ancient carnival Masks from Sardinia

these are Masks from the village of Ottana.
they are the Boes (bulls), the Merdules and Sa Filonzana (weaver), also in this case the masks have pre-roman and pre-christian origin.
The boes is the bull, an animal worshiped since prehistory in Sardinia, each mask shows in the forehead the symbol of Flower of Life, it revolts against the Merdule that is the bull's owner and it's depicted as a deformed face, while Sa Filonzana is a sad old woman who spins the wool, the wool yarn represents the fragility of earthly life.

I think they look more Eastern than most Italians actually. I think they fit better to the Balkans in features than do other Italians.
Not just features but perhaps genes too. Since Sardinia is mostly I2a haplogroup.

But, Also I think alot of them also look more French than other italians too.

They almost look like a mix of French & Balkan in features.

I also find these girls to be much more pretty than typical Italians.

Su Turcu (Carnival mask of Ollolai)
Su turcu means the "turkish", because this carnival costume looks like the clothes of muslim women, like the burqa, but the real meaning of this costume is totally different; as all sardinian masks, this one has a double nature, it represents the death and the life.
the veil that covers the face represents the veil of death, while the other cloth is the dress used during the baptism.

i have always thought that these dances were uniques, the pecularity of main sardinian dances is that they are danced in big circles, not in line, infact the sardinian dances are commonly known as "Ballo Tondo" (that means round dance)(i'm pretty sure that also the dancers in the video linked by Aces High end the dance in a circle), the circle symbolizes the cycle of seasons and of the Sun, and in all sardinian dances the upper part of body and arms don't move, only legs.

we sardinians are very distant from a genetic point of view from southern italians.

i don't know if phenotypes are always related with genotypes but the most spread haplogroups among sardinians are
the Haplogroup I that is found in main percentage in the Balkans, though the distinctive sardinian subtype is the I1b1b, in the next map is shown as M26, that is more southwestern european, probably originated in the Pyrenees, infact, today, the main concentration out sardinia is found in the department of Bearn, and in the Basque Country.

while the 3rd most common haplogroup, after the R1b, is the the G2a one, that comes from Caucasus, the main concentration is found exactly in Georgia, according to this chart:

Is Cerbus (The Deer)
two very ancient carnival masks from the town of Sinnai, they represent the ritual of the hunt to the deer,
all the costumes are done with the fur of the Sardinian Deer (Cervus elaphus corsicanus), a subspecies of the European deer endemic of Corsica and Sardinia.

yes, each single town has own costume, it's due to the fact that many of these towns remained isolated for centuries, and the distances among the towns are generally high due to the orography, so every town developed own peculiar culture, not only the costumes, but also the languages spoken, even aspect of people and genetics sometimes is different from town to town.

they need to spend till some centuries or even thousands years to reach the Old World in terms of folkoristic variety! :D

The Urthos, one of the three carnival masks from the town of Fonni (province of Nuoro)
the Urthu (Urthos plural) represents the "God of Darkness", or an orc, or according to some ethnologists a bear, but bears are exinct in sardinia, probably from the paleolithic.

this costume is realised with ram's fur, and as great part ancient sardinian mask the faces are covered with cork's ash.

Sos Corriolos are the traditional carnival masks from the town of Neonèli (Province of Oristano)

On the left Viana do Castelo, northwestern Portugal (christian festival) and on the right Macedo de Cavaleiros northeastern Portugal (pagan carnival tradition).

i have also noticed a connection and similarities between iberian costumes and masks and sardinian ones.
the connections among the ancient masks is very interesting, because great part of sardinian carnival masks have pagan origin, so they are centuries older than the aragonese conquest of sardinia happened in 15th century.

Tell one thing do you have the so called spear dance in Sardinia? Something like this:

Because one of this days a Croat told me that they have in Croatia something more or less like this except there the music is performed by a band and in the Miranda plateau is what we call Celtic (bagpipes and drums) and we tend to classify it as pre roman but for them is much more recent because they say it comes from the times of the fights with the moors. For them that’s a much more recent event than for us. The moors vaguely stepped in the Miranda plateau some 1200-1300 years ago. I really would like to understand if this is really a widespread tradition in the Mediterranean and how do other cultures place it in the time line. Grazie Mille.

i have never heard about a similar dance here before.

the most famous sardinian mask according to some ethnologists (though probably they have more ancient origin), as you said for Croatia, represents the fight against the moors,
they are called Mamuthones (they are the personification of the moors and they are depicted with a monstrous aspect, black mask, and black fur), they are also called ""beste 'e turcu" (that means cloth of the saracen):

We do not have this Christian agains Moor more mediterranic tradition. In Spain, around Valencia and Alicante (at least) they have this "Moros y Cristianos" festival a very interesting tradition but looks too Touristic today, it is almost the Carnival in Rio :-)

In particular the last people that i have shown comes from the most interior region of Sardinia, the Barbagia, or Barbarìa (land of barbarians) as the ancient romans named the region, it's the most untouched area of the island.

Is Mustayonis e S'Orku Foresu

These are two ancient masks from the town of Sestu.
S'orku is an evil zoomorphic mask that is killed by the Mustayonis, that represents a pagan demon protector of harvests.

I think the name Posada in that sardinian village is a hispanicism, Posada is a spanish word, but also Romanian is a conservative romance language, like sardinian, so i'm not surprised about the linguistic similarity. There are some words in sardinian language that have the same translation in romanian.

yes, generally male costumes are constituted with white shirts and pants, covered by a sort of skirt, and unlike the female ones are simplier and less colourful.

My knowledge of Sardinia is poor. But from what I've seen. The place has a strong culture and proudly so.

One of the main reasons I like the Apricity, are threads like these. People should show off their culture more. cheers.

for example i think great part of people ignore the existence of this:
since you are scottish, in Sardinia exists a kind of fighting, called Strumpa or Isthrumpa,officially recognised from the international federation of celtic fightings, very similar to the Scottish Backhold.

I do not know how some people told most population from Sardinia are mediteranids,because a lot of them can be seen clearly that they are not mediteranids.
Lol @ who wrote that book and said Sardinia is mostly mediteranid,I guess they went and analyzed some very few people from somewhere in Sardinia and extended what they found there for whole Sardinia.
A very "scientific" method,haha.
Look at this "mediteranid" very brahycephalic ,very hard boned,very muscular,with redish skin tone (he does not have any traits of mediteranid):

Well swedes and norwegians have very good conditions of life and lots of them are dolicocephalic.
So I think that old studies which found most sardinians dolicocephalic were not performed really well.
Or maybe the people who made the older studies were not really willing to accept that there is not such thing as uniform race so they have not done those studies to reflect reality,or they had the ideea "sardinians are mediteraneans so they need to be dolicocephalic".

i have not written correctly before, sardinians are still dolicocephalic (except the northern ones that are mesocephalics and brachicephalics), but in new generations the dolicocephaly is less marked than in past, and there is a process towards the brachicephalization.

this is the anthropometric study realised few years ago

that, on average, they are now taller, longer-limbed, wider and heavier with longer heads and wider faces than their same-sex peers two decades ago.
The data for the cephalic index in Sardinian males suggest a tendency

great part of the physical features of sardinians described from the ancient anthropologists were surely influenced from enviromental and social economic factors, as bad condition of life, malnutrition, endemic desesases as malaria (eradicated only in 1950) and tubercolosis, etc.

The Mamuthones

The carnival costume of the Mamuthones is the island’s most famous carnival mask and it represents a thousand-year-old tradition, though Today it is associated with the Saracens and Moors, depicted with a black evil mask and dark fur, they are defeated by Sardinian people, in their vain attempt to invade the island.

The Mamuthone is covered in a sheepskin and wears a black wooden mask. He is weighed down by numerous cowbells on his back which often exceed 30kg.

The Mamuthones make their way through the streets in single file, occasionally jumping in rhythm so their cowbells ring out in an unmistakable and scary sound. They are led in procession by the Issohadores (a costume with a white mask that represents sardinian people fighting the enemies), they use long ropes made from rushes to capture the mamuthones. Without the weight of the cowbells the Issohadores are more agile than their prisoners but they accompany them in their slow rhythmical progression through the town.

The Fires of Sant' Antonio in the village of Ottana (province of Nuoro)

It's an ancient pagan ritual based on the cult of fire, spread in several sardinian villages, though this festival today is associated with the christian Saint Anthony.
