View Full Version : My opinion on genetic testing

I do it only for fun, because it has not much relevance in real life to what your identity is or how you are perceived, but its interesting and fun. Also doing so many tests I think they are not that precise often or most of the time the results vary and you can get a bit different results but they can broadly tell you your ethnicity. Like northern european, southern european, balkans, westasian, northafrican, jewish, southasian, admixed american etc. For example its clear from my genetic results that Im Roma and from Balkans. I knew this before anyways, but it is confirmed. Especially on gedmatch it literally spells out roma for me. 23andme highlights my countries of origin as in the balkan regions too so additionally to knowing im Roma I also confirmed that Im from Balkans. Thats my opinion.

I'm not gonna do it cuz this forum confirmed for me you get what you are basically and it's sometimes a little off even. I'd prob get 50% Serbian/Croatian/Bosniak (whatever that is called...is it South Slavic), 20% Slovak and 20% German which is what I am basically.

But how reliable is Punt, as compared to the others like Eurogenes K13 as an example? And I would think Serbian would still be closer than Romani in some of the other Oracles.

Yes basically you get what you are and it is not neccessary if you know who you are. Only surprise could be if your father isnt your biological father but a jew is your biological father. I say jew because then you would have surprise of 50% ashkenazi jew which would be different from what you are.

Im more Romani then Serbian though. If you read my Profile, you will see that Im 56% Romani only 35% Serbian. So from knowing my ancestry it is reliable. Because I know my great great grandparents etc. And only 6 have been Serbs but 9 have been Romani. So why would Serbian be closer?

I already asked my mom about this and she said he was a 100% my father so I don't have any surprises waiting for me lol

I had forgotten that your Father had some minor Russian and Roma as well.

For me it was really interesting and I don’t regret it since I discovered many things about which ethnicity my ancestors could be. There was even a man who contacted me and told me that some of my ancestors are armenians and that part is still vague. Also the fact that I match with pontic greeks, azerbaijanis and a chechen dude suprised me but I feel like I still didn’t figure it out yet

I pretty much do them for fun too. My ancestry is very well documented so I pretty much knew what I was going to receive from the get-go. I just enjoy having the confirmation, I suppose.

I didn't know I had such high Native DNA; the tests helped me realize that.

I haven't done it yet, but I'm thinking about it. I think it would be interesting cause I don't know a lot about my ancestry. I mean, One of my grandfathers was not Brazilian so I know where he was from, 2 of my great grandparents also, and the father of one of my great grandparents. That's all I know. And even these ones that I know where they came from, I don't know anything that happened before them, if they're parents or grandparents were really from where they were.

It's very good for people with mixed ancestry.
Serbs, Bosniaks are people with mixed Ancestry and our history is extremely rich.
Genetic testing has proved to me something that was always a speculation that: Bulgarians, Romanians, FYROM, Serbians and Bosnians are the same people... only history divided us.

What about Croatians?

What about Croatians?
They are closer to Slovenians, Czechs, Austrians, Hungarians etc.. of course that doesn't apply to Dalmatian and Bosnian Croats who are not Croats but align with them due to Religious connections.
Even Bosnian people from NW Bosnia are like that.
However Southern and Eastern Bosnians, Serbs, FYROM, Bulgarians and Romanians are closer to each other.

To be honest, these tests were really designed for new worlders, mainly White Americans because many of them don't know exactly where their ancestry comes from.

I originally did the test so that I could run my results through Promethease and get health information. (I wanted to see if an illness one of my parents got was hereditary- turns out it isn't!) I didn't need the ancestry information because I know exactly what places my parents and grandparents were from before coming to Canada and the USA. But ever since I found GEDmatch and this forum, I've actually become interested in learning about all of this stuff; it shows you human history through how we've migrated around over thousands of years. It's also given me a lot of historical cultures to look into and read about....I'd never even heard of Natufians or the Yamnaya before I got into this.

There are tons of Jews on GEDmatch, but I don't get any strong Jewish matches. Probably you have some distant Jewish ancestor. I know of one such case, a Russian guy on Anthrogenica is about 1/16 Ashkenazi, it doesn't show up on FTDNA but he tested his grandma and it did show up in her results. He also gets a few Jewish matches.

hmm, it makes sense. My great-grandfather from mother's side had Jewish-like surname. Also, father's name of my mother's father was Mark, very uncommon for Ukrainian.

I've learned more through the raw data files they provide than I have the testing results themselves. Davidski has done more for me than the testing services. Because of him I know the entire truth.
