You're a full North Aegean, right?

I think we are seeing a lot of these islanders being less deviant from mainland Greeks than other islands. A lot of these plot north of South Italians, too.

Any samples from Naxos, Paros, Syros? May be better indicators for Cyclades than Andros.

No, unfortunately. But I do know given the proximity to Peloponnese geographically, I would too expect them to be somewhat shifted toward them.

Similarly, based on 23andme results, I also expect Lesbos to be a bit mainland shifted (i.e. north of South Italians and Cretans).

No, unfortunately. But I do know given the proximity to Peloponnese geographically, I would too expect them to be somewhat shifted toward them.

Similarly, based on 23andme results, I also expect Lesbos to be a bit mainland shifted (i.e. north of South Italians and Cretans).

Ah shoot, that's too bad.

Can you make a similar thread for Peloponnesians?

I have to gather the samples.

What do you think of these? What explains the results shifting north? Mainland Greek input on some islands?

I have no idea. But I think we'd be pulling strings when analyzing the small differences, if you know what I mean

I don't know. all I know is, of these islands, Ikaria is the most South Italian like and has the least extra northern.

Which is kind of weird, right? Not sure what would make them shifted that way historically either. They've had ties with Samos since forever

Maybe Samos received migration from the mainland. Of all the North Aegean islands, Samos seems the most 'north' shifted, almost slightly an outlier.

I have never been told anything of the sort. Only one or two small villages had Arvanite migration, so that would have no impact on the greater population's genetics. That was done in many different regions, however. For example Hydra island in the Saronic Gulf is famous for that.

The only other possibility is higher historical MENA input on some other islands to dilute the northern element.

It's interesting because Samos has had a connection with Anatolia since the ancient times, both were part of the Ionian branch of Ancient Greeks. It's also the closest geographical island to Anatolia, so you would think it'd be perhaps more 'exotic' :dunno:

I don't know if this is true but I heard somewhere the Turks massacred many of the island's natives and they were later replaced with mainland Greeks.

Your own results show, though, that many North Aegean islanders do shift toward the mainland and are not absolved from NE European input (which likely arrived indirectly from the mainland).

Wait yes, I am. So that explains why Chios plots a bit north.

But what about Samos? And Lesbos? Maybe the North Aegean just never plotted as south as other islands?

You're a full North Aegean, right?

I think we are seeing a lot of these islanders being less deviant from mainland Greeks than other islands. A lot of these plot north of South Italians, too.

Maybe more north euro but it seems they may have more west Asian then south Italians or at least on the references . On the mixed population sharing keep seeing them modeled as 80 - 90 percent south Italian plus 10 - 20 percent Georgian/abkhazian/Turkish/Armenian/Iranian . So pretty much on with southern Italians but probly little more Caucasus

Not all of them are scoring that way though. Those who do, it is likely due to absorption of Anatolian Greeks to nearby islands. Some of these people are scoring South Italian + something Slavic.

What I notice is they have less Red Sea than southern Italians also. Might be because there is less North African/Levantine. But there are actually some southern Italians who score the extra Armenian and Georgian and whatnot.

Samos has many Anatolian Greeks. We plot the same as Greeks from Smyrna.

Also I think it's more so the North Africa I would assume.

Samos results do not seem to plot like Anatolian Greeks though. Those results look more like Maniots or something (far south Peloponnese).

Sicilians have more Red Sea/North african/Arabian like DNA than the Aegean islands and less Caucasus and Baltic.

I have an Anatolian surname so I must have had ancestors from there once upon a time. Most of the time my results are pretty straightforward, but one some calculators I plot as something like 50% Greek South 25% Trabzon Turk 25% Iberian. But those can get very silly.

Your other point makes sense to me.

Don't you come up halfway between mainland Greeks and south Italians? To me this implies you don't plot like a West Anatolian Greek, you plot like an islander with above average mainland Greek (and possibly indirect Slavic) ancestry.

Of all south Italians by the way it is Calabrians who generally plot closer to Anatolian Greeks, not Sicilians for whichever reason.

I dunno where the hell I come up. But West Anatolian Greeks are simply Greek Islanders by genetics. So I'm sure even they have small differences such as shown in the islands as well.

I don't take any of GedMatch's category names literally. I think there's no possible way these results can prove or tell you much, other than a good comparison model between different places. The differences in islands is so minute, it's clear that we're all the same ethnic group and of course every single person's results will be different. You could find 5 people from Samos who have similar results to someone from Ikaria, and 5 people from Samos who are similar to Chios.

I am more interested to see what Greeks from the Peloponnese get so I can compare it with Greek Islanders as an entire group. I have an idea of what to expect, but I'd rather see it first. Thanks again for putting it all in one place, it's easier that way.

Peloponnese plot north of Greek islands and South Italy but some of the islanders with a more northern shift plot like Maniots and Laconians it looks like.

I also posted Calabrians in another thread to compare to.

The population of Chios after the massacre was replaced with populations from Smyrna, Samos, Lesbos aka the places where Chiotes had already fled. Τhere is no reason that they will replaced with mainlanders as the massacre happended ~90 years before the East-Aegean joined modern Grecee when most of the mainland was already free. Antonis Bournias who led the revolt in Chios took with him some klephtic families from Roumelia (Central-Greece, Thessaly, West-Macedonia) to Samos, from where they were deployed to Chios. There is a possibility that they would have some effect but I doubt it would be notable. Another interesting fact about Samos is that like in Lesbos they use phonetics similar to Northern Greek dialects.

In any case, the variance is small in the genetic results posted(~4% in each main component). It's not like some Samian comes out as the Northernmost Epirot when some Ikariot comes out as Cypriot.

Yes, 100%. The differences between islanders and many Laconians are also miniscule.

Also a side note, the Red Sea component seems to be useless and random, as it's basically the same between Islanders and Peloponnesians.
