Catanzaro East Med is through the god damn roof for K15, which I'm assuming these all are.

Catanzaro seems to have extremely high East Med, while Reggio Calabria and Vibo Valentia have elevated Red Sea. On the other hand, Cosenza seems to be less "exotic" than the other regions which makes sense, it is the northernmost one.

What I find interesting is, most of these are more outlying than Sicilians and Cretans. The question is why?

Calabria didn't really have Normans, nor Lombards and most of the Greek settlement was not from the mainland so this could be why.

I was hoping you had an idea  Why the hell is it so high.

Sicily is an island, Calabria is connected to everywhere else. Kinda weird

Calabria didn't receive much settlement from North Europe and has almost no Steppe.

The question is why do they have such high Near Eastern. Jewish input could be, or it could be a lot of the Byzantine "Greeks" in Calabria weren't from Greece but from West Asia, like Pontics, Cypriots, or Antioch Greeks.

I'll ask one of my friends if they have any idea/if a grandmother ever told them stories or something lol. I highly doubt it though. I have no idea at all

There has to be some reason for it. I think it has to do with a lack of northern inputs into the area.

Many of my Calabrese friends are from there. They have spectrum of looking uber-Italian, to white atlantid, to dark and more 'exotic'

Exotic as in what? Where would they pass?

These are two major spectrums of Calabrese from Catanzaro that exist:

This is a map of Calabria... it is the three southernmost provinces, especially Vibo Valentia in my experience where you find really Near Eastern outliers in the genetics. The phenotype should correspond to this also.

Calabria didn't really have Normans?? LOL What? Are you serious? You don't know anything about Calabria's history then.

During their reign, William of Hauteville and Guaimar IV began the conquest of Calabria in 1044, and built the castle of Stridula (near Squillace). In 1048 Drogo commanded an expedition into Calabria via the valley of Crati, near Cosenza. He distributed the conquered territories in Calabria and gave his brother, Robert Guiscard, a castle at Scribla to guard the entrance to the recently conquered territory; Guiscard would later abandon it for a castle at San Marco Argentano.
During the Byzantine - Norman wars, Robert began his tenure with a Calabrian campaign. Briefly interrupted for the Council of Melfi on 23 August 1059 (where he was invested as duke), he returned to Calabria—and his army's siege of Cariati—later that year. The town capitulated at the duke's arrival, and Rossano and Gerace also fell before the end of the season. Of the peninsula's significant cities, only Reggio remained in Byzantine hands when Robert returned to Apulia that winter. Reggio Calabria, the capital of the tagma of Calabria, was captured by Robert Guiscard in 1060. After the fall of Reggio the Byzantine garrison fled to Reggio's island citadel of Scilla, where they were easily defeated.
After expelling the Byzantines from Apulia and Calabria, Robert Guiscard planned an attack on Byzantine possessions in Greece. The Norman domination in Southern Italy introduced the feudal system and the latinization of the cult, according to the Roman church.
So, between 1053 - 1059 A. D. Robert Guiscard established a Norman kingdom in southern Italy. He conquers Calabria, Benevento (1054 A.D.), and allies himself with Pope Nicholas II (r. 1059-1061), whom he protects from being dominated by Germanic rulers, and receives papal sanction to rule Calabria, Puglia (the heel of the Italian peninsula), and the island of Sicily.
Frederick II of Sweden followed the Normans and ruled until 1268.

Not only was Calabria ruled by the Normans, but nowadays you can still find plenty of traces and ruins of Norman architecture and castles in Calabria (Scalea, Laino borgo, Roseto, Malvito, Altomonte, Bisignano, Rossano, S. Marco Argentano, Luzzi (Sambucina), Montalto, Cosenza, S.Giovanni in Fiore, Corazzo, Taverna, Nicastro, Simeri, Catanzaro, Borgia, Squillace, Tropea, Nicotera, Serra S. Bruno (S. Stefano del bosco), Arena, Stilo, Bivongi, Bagnara, Gerace, Reggio Cal., Bova, etc...).

Even the lowest scoring ones seem to have around 25% steppe admixture.

The new global25 calculator will probably be more accurate though.

Global25 has low sample sizes.

But which components are you adding up to discern Steppe admixture? Just curious.

It's low because they only upload high quality academic samples. The groups in our region barely have 5, and no more than 10 thus far which isn't much. They should add some more samples soon....eventually.

I add the North Sea, Atlantic, East Euro, and Baltic components together to discern the total Steppe admixture. Basically every European component barring West Med.
