I've only one name to add to this, but it's a very important one to me (and probably Aemma too) since it's the only surviving Frankish name for Odin that exists:

Ascaric or Ascarich
This name survived as it was borne by a 4th century Frankish King (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ascaric). It is a combination of two elements: Asc (ash, meaning the tree or a spear shaft) and ric (king)

Hmm, to me most of these names seem to be purpose names more than anything.

Eg. different circumstances different names. makes me wonder if it would be applicable that do the same in modern tongues. As it seems that, that was the practice back then, so why not now?

Hench forth he shall be known as My pal :P no not really as that could be seen as disrespectful how ever it serves to clarify my point.

Your Reflections?

With Odin, many the various heiti, or by-names, he bears seem to stem from his shamanic origins. It's well documented that magicians throughout Eurasia take on a multitude of names. Also, with the Scandinavian poetic traditions, heiti and kennings were used to preserve the formal structures of the poems.

Also, with the Scandinavian poetic traditions, heiti and kennings were used to preserve the formal structures of the poems.

Well that could stem from that surely, it could also have a much simpler explanation, Björn for instance, Instead of writing it down or telling of it as he fought with the might of many men, or he had the strength of many men.
It could easily be seen that he was given the name or title of Björn as it was well known among the Scandinavian people the strength of the bear, and it's ferocity.
Or it could simply been a bear that followed someone trough the woods, this person wanting to have a good story liked it together with the high one.

After all it has been a long standing tradition, at least here to give names based on characteristics and use those where it seems fitting. The extremely slow one being referred to as lightning :D:p

Or it may well be linked together with magic, though I think logically not all names that survive comes from this.

I've known of some of Odin's various names and meanings, but it's an interesting list. From a Shamanic perspective he could easily be summoned for a specific purpose - as I'm sure he is. Has anyone applied this kind of summoning to their rites, and if so, what was the purpose, along with the end result? I'm not meaning to go off-topic but I'm curious. As a Shaman, I work along those lines.

Edit: Posts relating to shamanism moved here (http://www.theapricity.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1360)

This I find very interesting. Information about Frankish heathenry is scarce. Thanks.
