View Full Version : Why are some real life close cousins not a DNA match for me?

I wasn't adopted! I have cousins who I met at family reunion who are no more than 2nd or 3rd or 4th cousins and they are considered non matches on DNA tests! Then I have people I have never heard of who match me. S Impossible because my Aunt never had any children. My 2nd cousin who is listed as a DNA match , ends up being called a "4th cousin". This is both on 23and me and Ancestry. Not possible , because we both have the same great grandparents. I'm starting to thing that DNA testing is bunk.

Oh, it is. Uncertain to say the least. But the fact is is that DNA is inherited so randomly, that it can come up with such results...

GEDMatch has a bunch of different matching calculators now, and they come up wildly different results. In their new "Revolutionary" Q-matching, suddenly I share 22cM with my wife.

Over generations you may be closer or more distant genetically to distant relations than other relatives. Do you actually think everyone inherits exactly 12.5% of a great-grandparent's genes...?

I don't know if DNA matches are as accurate as the DNA percentages itself. My grandfather took a test and he's listed as a 1st cousin. I wouldn't take the DNA matches as gospel anyways.

well thinking about it both 1st cousin and grandpa should have roughly 25 % of your dna , so in a way it's not totally in the air as a thing.

You only recieve half of the dna from your mother and half the dna of your father. Your cousins has inherited an ancestor you didnt. This is why they say if you want to get a full picture of your ancestry you need to test as many relatives as you can. The half you recieve from your mother and father is random and that is why siblings results can vary.

@ Dick

Is that what you think, lol? No its natures fault because we should inherit evidence of every ancestor we have had and every family member should inherit the same genetic segments from these ancestors. would that make you happy?

And race is a social construct

What does that have to do with what I said? I never mentioned race.

DNA testing is not bunk.

I believe it's not infallible with genetics and ancestry. It's only useful in cases such as a paternity test.

If you interested, give me your and their gedmatch kit. I will check then.

No need. I did this already. It matched some of them there.
