My results on GEDmatch come out like I am half Ashkenazi, which means I would score the same on these calculators if my father was Ashkenazi rather than Sicilian. So where is my 1/8 Sardinian?
I think either I have less than 1/8 Sardinian despite my paternal grandmother having a Sardinian surname, or my Sicilian side is so MENA shifted compared to the average that it swallows it.
This is how I am modeled in 3-way modeling on GEDMatch. Remember my mother is Portuguese and Polish, with 1/32 SSA.
MDLP K23:
1 50% Ashkenazi_Jew_ +25% French_South_ +25% Sorb_ @ 1.832459
Dodecad K12b:
1 50% Ashkenazi_Dodecad +25% Belorussian_Behar +25% French_Basque_HGDP @ 1.615143
HarappaWorld:
1 50% ashkenazi_harappa +25% slovenian_xing +25% spain-basc_henn2012 @ 1.235583
PuntDNA-L K13:
1 50% French +25% French_Basque +25% Jordanian @ 2.056253
Two way mixes on MDLP World and MDLP World22 give these:
1 50% Ashkenazim_V_derived +50% German-South_derived @ 3.935761
1 50% Ashkenazim_V +50% French @ 3.221337
Only Eurogenes K13 gives Sardinian for me, and the other parts do not match what I know:
1 50% Greek_Thessaly +25% Sardinian +25% Southwest_Finnish @ 2.742166

My buddy's last name is Palermo. They're from Sicily (of course) but they recently found out an ancestor chose that name when he settled there, and they're actually Jewish. Could be a similar story on your end?

No. On commercial testing services which are well programmed to detect Jewish ancestry, I only score minimal amounts, likely overlap with Sicily. My point is, my father seems half Sicilian, not Sicilian mixed with Sardinian.

He and I do not speak.
I only see two possibilities here:
1. The Sardinian ancestry is less than 1/8 (on 23andme it comes through as 2.5% or so)
2. My Sicilian side is so MENA that it counterbalances the Sardinian on GEDmatch and makes it appear to not be there.

I wish I could help but I really don't know enough about Sardinia to even guess. Interesting place. I'm sure you're hoping for #2 though

My Sicilian side is from Palermo (area with high post-Neolithic MENA input) and Messina (the area with the least Steppe and Northern European input) so it would not surprise me if, regardless of the presence of Sardinian ancestry or not, if my Sicilian side is in fact more MENA than average.

Pay for a LM report or a global25? Cheap and way more accurate.

How many Sicilians and other Italians have migrated to Sardinia, historically?

So what do people think explains this?

Your Sardinian ancestry went over board and sank down to the bottom of the Thyrrenean Sea 400
meters before Palermo's coast

Do you really expect calculators made by Pakistani and Polish immigrants to give you an accurate description of your ancestry?
