View Full Version : Confederate Carlists in the American Civil War.
According to the material on this webpage, it seems that there were several thousand of them fighting for the Confederacy in the ACW.

Ah! So it was actual Spaniards! I had always thought it was Cubans who helped the Confederacy out as opposed to actual Spaniards (since Cuba is so close to Florida), good find!
Whole new respect for Spain knowing now there's some tie with my Confederate home. :D
Some of the Carlists fled to England and France and some came to the U.S. and took up the Confederate cause since it seems to have reminded them a great deal of their own struggle with the liberals in Spain.
Edit comments: In retrospect I'm sure some Cubans, Mexicans, etc. fought for the south; Texas was a Confederate state after all and many Spanish criollo families lived there (and in Cuba).

I don't know about you but I've always been a fan of the Carlists.
Though, I would like very much to see Spain ruled by a Habsburg again, in fact. Can you imagine a new unified Habsburg Empire under the administration of the less inbred side of the family?

I'm two things a: Constitutionalist and a Confederate sympathizer.
I might as well add Carlist sympathizer to this list as well.
It's a sad thing, but I doubt that this thread will get a great deal of attention.
