View Full Version : Do non overweight people have stronger taste buds?

I was wondering about a theory. Some people propose that overweight people have more active taste buds so they eat more food. But I was wondering if it could actually be quite the opposite. Obese people are not tasting the food normally or the way that non obese taste the food. Thus, they eat more food to get the same result. Imagine putting something in your mouth and it had less taste than usual. Wouldn't you naturally eat more to get more taste? Flavor and tasting in food tend to be largely genetic. People who aren't overweight are getting plenty of taste with each bite, so they don't feel the need to eat more food. Maybe this could explain why some people don't get fat.

It's simple. If you get fat your body fat produces substances that increase your resistance to insulin. This causes insulin to stay in the blood flow instead of being used by your cells. And, insulin being a strong stimulator of hunger, your need to eat bigger quantities increases, so you start putting on weight even faster. It's the spirale of obesity aka metabolic syndrome.

How do you fix it? I am trying the Mediterranean diet. I count all my calories and I'm barely eating 2,000 on a bad day. Some people are saying the insulin resistance is a myth.

Cut back to 1,500. No it's not a myth.

You can get addicted and desensitized somewhat to sugars or fats. That’s why you have to work constantly and destroy that addiction.

1500 calories for a big man. That is hardly anything. Like 1 sandwich and an egg or something.

My typical diet is usually Oatmeal , eggs, and some turkey/chicken. I have generally 3 meals a day and two snacks. I am eating more olive oil, and I like to have Greek salads. I do slip back into bad habits. For example, I work at fast food and have eaten fast food as often as twice a week. I think most of the weight gain is actually from sodium. Sodium bloat. When I stop eating that stuff, I drop all the salt immediately and I feel thinner. But I do have flab. I drink mostly water. I don't drink alcohol. I only have sweet tea and desserts on Sunday.

I took in 1,300 calories today. I have been around that from the beginning. I was 245lbs at 5-9. Five meals a day. One every three hours.

On this program I am on it took two weeks to end my cravings for sugar. During that two weeks I lost 12lbs alone. You just have to get through those initial two weeks.

I really can't find anything wrong with it,it almosts sounds ketogenic or atkins , no heavy carbs as someone would expect neither much junk food or bad fats and twice a week fast food is not enough to blame weight gain on it, maybe it's the quantity of those? In this case you could eat the same foods but less?Another reason could be that it's too "atkins" and slows your metabolism ?Also some have correlated keto to insulin resistance.
I don't know ,as for the water weight of course sodium content plays a role but it's not what's imporant in transformating an appearance, fitness maniacs can cut on sodium when they are 10% bf to show veins but still they are 10%.

I highly doubt you take 2000 in at your weight, you're not counting your calories properly, or avoiding hidden ones like oil, butter, etc. I just put your weight and height into a TDEE calculator, you're on about 2973 calories a day for maintenance, you'd be losing 2 pounds a week on 2k calories.

I'm not eating anywhere near that much. I would be sick! I still enter all my calories into Lose IT and, I'm having an average of 2300 calories at the most when I exercise and some days I eat about 1900 or less.
I should not be fat.

BTW, Those calculators are way off. I bet I'm one of those few people who can't eat more than 2200 calories at my weight.

Here's an example of a very BAD off diet day for me:

1.3 fried eggs 1 piece of toast 1 glass of milk 500

2. Chick Fil A: Chicken Club Sandwich: 550 c
Medium Fries 340 c
Medium Sweet Tea 180 c

3.Small Bagel with Cheese 350
Chips 150

4.Chocolate/cookies snack 400

Total Calories on "off day" : 2,468

And I usually exercise too.

Quit sugar, no soft drinks, no desserts, no chocolate or candy. Avoid baked goods such as muffins, or doughnuts, drink lots of water. I basically only eat meat and vegetables or rice, some cereals and fruit. Fish, Pork, Chicken and some red meat in the form of Beef or in my case I often eat Moose.

I rarely have sweets of any kind, also if you drink tea or coffee avoid too much cream or sugar. My weight usually fluctuates about 5lbs morning to evening, and I very rarely eat junk food.

It's not about how food tastes, but rather about quality and moderation.

In these two days off calories don't matter, all these foods in one day combined delay any progress but I wouldn't tell you to stop having some days you could enjoy yourself but I'd suggest some adjustments like 1.omelette with low fat-cheese or some kind of meat or both(to replace carbs with protein)
2.Fries with some kind of meat &Coke zero or tea with stevia/other additives if there is any at store.
3&4 I guess they are later in the day which contributes to fat gain, imo it'd be better if you had one more full meal like fries&meat instead of this "garbage"
believe me I used to eat a lot of garbage too but if you stop, there's going to be a point where you won't even crave them back.

As for the exercise I guess it's aerobic?

Well you just have to stop eating when you’re bit full and not totally full. Don’t have anything to do with taste. You just have to know your limit and don’t eat like someone who hasn’t seen food in 628272 years with each meal otherwise you’ll gain weight. < I say this btw in general

Here is a sample of my meals. 5 meals a day and trust me this works. I use no butters or flavorings.

1. 2 Eggs, 2 pieces of wheat toast, and a serving of sugar free jam.
2. Turkey sandwich on wheat bread and greek yogurt.
3. Lean Cuisine(I make certain I buy the meals that do not usually exceed 40 carbs.
4. Ground Turkey with a little ketchup and a cup of mixed veggies, spinach, or broccoli.
5. 1 serving of sugar free peanut butter or chocolate pudding, chicken breast with no skin.

Nah I think that theory is false. I used to be obese myself and would eat a lot because it was habitual due to my large appetite from consuming large amounts of food (the stomach expands so you need to eat more to feel sated).

The only theory I have heard that is similar to this is that smoking tobacco desensitises the taste buds to an extent. However, most smokers aren't usually overweight - quite the opposite in fact.

Cut out sugar sweetened beverages and fast food for ever. Also, stop adding sugar to everything you eat, I'm totally sure this will help, do some cardio too.

almost impossible. Sugar is almost everything we eat. Even vegetables. I guess you mean refined sugars? I rarely eat fast food, but at work I get really tired from being a dancing cow, so I grab something there because it's free.

Meade, there's no way you're counting your calories right, as I said, for your weight and height, I calculated based off moderate exercise you're consuming 2973 calories for maintenance, on 2000 you'd be losing 2 pounds a week. I was being kind and introducing moderate exercise into the equation, with little to no exercise you're well in excess of 3000 calories. 2000 calories my ass. And your diet blows by the way, all salts, fats and wasteful carbs. You won't get far living off chicken fillet burgers and chips.

I don't fast food very often. I was eating more this past month but was dancing for almost 2 hours in a cow suit . That is quite a bit of exercise, isn't it?

I tell you that I am counting all my calories, including toppings or butter (which I rarely use anyway). Today for example, I had 3 eggs, 1 piece of toast, and 2 waffles with syrup. That total was 550 cal.
Then I had a bagel with cheese which was 350 calories. Then I had 1 8 oz glass of milk which is 108 calories. I had 1 piece of grilled chicken breast which was 180 calories and 4 oz.
Yes, I slipped and had 2 cookies for dessert. those were 150 each, so 300 calories.

The daily total for all of this (and I cheated on my diet today) is nowhere near 3,000 calories. I don't know what is wrong. I am going to the Dr in January. I might have a thyroid issue or something.

Stop negging all my posts when I'm trying to help you, your weight isn't my fault.

Those calories you just mentioned barely add up to 1k, if you're consuming that low calories and gaining weight you probably have a severe thyroid problem. Only a doctor can help you it seems.

There's way more than 550 calories in 3 eggs, toast, and 2 waffles and more than 180 calories in 4oz chicken breast, so you are counting wrong.

None of this other stuff matters, not your taste buds, not your "hormones", not how much exercise you get, and it doesn't even really matter what you're eating. If you stay under your caloric maintenance level your body will lose weight.

Ever see one of those shows where they put hidden cameras in a person's house and secretly follow them around to keep track of everything they eat while they're on a diet? The people are always convinced they're sticking to their diet or only eating x amount of calories, and it's almost always discovered they're eating more than they realize or admit.

And normally I would agree with you. But in my case, it's simply not that . I really do not eat enough to be this fat. Most of my calories do not come from sugar. I realize I don't eat a perfectly clean diet, and I want to fix that. But I don't eat near enough to weigh this much. There is something not working.

That's what everyone thinks when they aren't losing weight but there's nothing unique about you...physically anyway. It doesn't matter where the calories come from or how "clean" you eat. It's a simple numbers equation. You also have to stick to the diet for more than a few days a week and it takes a long time to see results, especially when you're a big fat fatty.

This is actually plausible. As in, this is likely what people would self-report. I went through a period where I would just stuff my mouth to cope with the stress uni gave me and I ballooned to 86 kilos. Later I lost 12 kilos and became 74 kilos.
I can tell you that food tastes bland and boring when you're constantly stuffing your mouth hole with it 24/7. All foods I loved; kebab, pizza, chips, chicken etc. They all became bland and boring.
Meanwhile when I was on a diet, everything tasted amazing because I only ate when hungry and out of necessity ( a bit less than maintenance amount). Apples tasted great, chicken breast tasted great, sandwiches tasted great and when I had the rare cheat meal, that was simply amazing. This is basically a life lesson. When you have something in abundance, you won't appreciate or enjoy it

1. I rarely eat chips, pizza, or any of that kind of heavy carb food. I usually have a lot of greens and lean meats with some kind of carb like toast or bread. But I use olive oil instead of butter.
2. I don't "stuff" myself with food. I eat 3 meals a day and two snacks.
3. I look at every nutritional label and write it down in my app called "lose it". I track my protein, carbs, and fats and calories that way
4. I do admit that I don't always have a "clean diet". Some times I do have cookies or something bad for me. I include to write that down as well

I include to write that down as well

just dont eat junk food. no cookies, no goo goo clusters. none of it.
it's not rocket science

I've never had an issue with weight and at my age I'm likely not to be super surprised by a sudden drastic change but I just don't see how people struggle with weight so much. Just eat less and exercise more until it works. Right?

I have to admit, I'm a bit fascinated by these goo goo clusters. Are they big in the south?

I just looked it up myself and it sounds like I've really been missing out. I get the feeling they are popular in the south.

"The GooGoo Cluster is an American candy bar created in 1912 by Howell Campbell and the Standard Candy Company in Nashville, Tennessee.[1] The disk-shaped candy bar contains marshmallow nougat, caramel, and roasted peanuts covered in milk chocolate. Variations include GooGoo Supreme (pecans replace the peanuts) and Peanut Butter GooGoo (peanut butter replaces marshmallow nougat and caramel)

The candy was sold at the Grand Ole Opry (GOO), which was established in 1925, 13 years after the candy's debut. However, Standard Candy (with particular emphasis on the GooGoo Cluster) was a long-time sponsor of the program"

Once you get fat, it changes everything. Especially if you are fat for awhile. Your body wants to stay fat. I got obese at 12 years old. So it's something I've been dealing with ever since.

Why do thin people eat junk food, though and not get fat? I don't have it very often.

I don't wanna be mean and I've said it before, if you're not overeating your weight problem is due to lack of sex, it's hormonal.

you previously stated that following a healthy diet was difficult because healthy food doesnt "taste as good". I think you focus too much on the taste of food rather than eating for its basic purpose. This makes you eat more junk food.
you also eat big portions and seem obsessed with food, thats all you write about. Remember u should also workout,do light exercises, inactivity also contributes to your weight gain.

No i dont think overweight people have stronger taste, they just have an UNHEALTHY relationship with food which is psychological.

How so?

That's how our bodies work. Google for more.

if you're looking to shift some pounds, exercise alone may not be the answer to weight loss we once thought it was, as we reported last week.

Researchers from the University of Bangor in the United Kingdom found no discernible weight loss in women who had taken part in three sessions of circuit exercise training per week for either 4 or 8 weeks, despite burning around 3,400 calories in total during this time period.

On the contrary, the team identified changes in hormones that control appetite in overweight and obese study participants after exercise.

"[...] Someone undertaking more physical activity may experience increased appetite as a result," senior study author Hans-Peter Kubis, Ph.D., explains.

Sex might fill a useful gap here because hormones released during our amorous experiences cause us to eat less.
