My understanding, as a Westerner, has always been that the castes in India/Pakistan represent social status/station, and not ethnicity.. Is it in fact the case that those castes can also represent ethnicity?

cast in Pakistan/India is very much related to Genetics and origin. Cast is not to be confused with class, Many Gujjar and Jatts are very poor but look like high castes phenotypically as a group while many low cast origin groups like christians can be quite rich but their features remain that of associated with low castes.

In the Western mind, the castes of India/Pakistan signify social status/station/class/occupation only.. maybe that is a good example of a common misconception in the West concerning the Subcontinent..

i completely agree, most people from cities were kammi of villages who were forced out by rural groups into cities and now unfortunately they have become powerful and rich while most rurals are still dirt poor
