Wow... no, that was not the reason at all! The Protestants during the Reformation were deeply religious people, who had a personal faith. They saw the established Catholic church as corrupt and just out to make money and be powerhungry and greedy -- quite the opposite of what you were being told! Wow... I can't believe such lies are being told to people. No... these Protestants were very sincere believers who were often willing to endure persecution, even death, for their faith in God.

In many places, Protestants were willing to forego all their possessions, even lands and property and homes... in order to keep their faith in God. Like in Salzburg, they had to flee. If they had just agreed to convert back to Catholicism, they would have had an easy life... but they chose persecution instead, and would never betray their deep faith in God. Many Protestants were burned alive at the stake, rather than convert back to Catholicism which they viewed as idolatrous and corrupt.
