When asked what they considered to be their political views, a large random sample of professors responded (http://www.insidehighered.com/news/2009/03/05/faculty):

Overall
Far left-- 8.8%
Liberal-- 47.0%
Middle of the Road-- 28.4%
Conservative-- 15.2%
Far right-- 0.7%

The split by type of institution:

Imagine a number line, -2 through +2. ... -2 is the hard-left, +2 is the hard right.

(Overall: -0.48)
Public colleges are -0.47,
Private colleges are -0.57,
Catholic schools are -0.46,
Protestant/Mormon schools are -0.23

So university professors are left-wing, hmm... In other shocking news, Seattle will get rain at some point this year:D

But that the expensive, exclusive private colleges are the most left-wing; I'm not sure what to make of that.

Edit: A funny comment from somebody--

Overall
Far left-- 8.8%
Liberal-- 47.0%
Middle of the Road-- 28.4%
Conservative-- 15.2%
Far right-- 0.7%
But the 28.4% who think they are middle of the road are actually Liberal and the 47% thinking they are Liberal are really Far left, and the 8.8% who think that are Far left are actually Pol Pot supporters.

Digging-up an old thread, but why not.

I just wanted to mention that it cannot be assumed that the "non-Catholic" religious schools are strictly Mormon/Protestant. There is a huge number of Jewish schools in the nation, and their educators are some of the most conservative ones allowed to keep their jobs.

I've had some good professors who aren't ultra-liberal, which is fortunate, whereas I go to an extremely underfunded bare-bones public college.
