Dragoș was from Maramureș. I wouldn't consider him the founder as he was a vassal of the Hungarian king. The true founder of the independent Moldavian principality was Bogdan I, also from Maramureș. As El_Moldovano said, these portraits are modern portrayals that have no historical basis.

Yes he was from Maramures county, it is known before he founded Moldova he was also Baron of Khust in Zakarpattia Oblast in Ukraine. His origin Vlach but is speculated his ancestor wealthy came from Wallachia, is unknown specifics.

Bogdan, a Vlach landowner who is also one us, has replaced Balc, Dragos grandson, as Voivode. That is when our people has moved not far to Pokuttia region in Ukraine where was dual state under Kingdom of Poland and Principality of Moldova, that is ofcourse region we founded, Moldova.
