I knew about him for years since he played a lot in Serbia, but I always thought he was of immigrant descent. Only recently I learned he was an ethnic German...I tried my best to look for any mention of foreign ancestry because his appearance is so unbelievable, but I found none :)

wtf? That's so bizarre. The only pic where he looks remotely German is that last one, and even there not that much.

He has plenty of photos with his family on his instagram profile. They don't look Nordic, but they don't have any of the exotic traits he does. His sister also looks unsual for a German to me.
It's possible that some people just develop odd traits or have recessive genes resurface. Remember Matts and Jonas Hummels, German football players, both very swarthy, much darker than their parents? Many people here said they look much more Turkish than German.
