I found this and thought it was interesting enough to post here.
It appears one of the nearest genetic relatives of the Irish outside of Ireland are a handful of little known Finno-Ugrian speaking tribes who live in Northern Russia and Siberia: the Mari, the Komi, the Nganasan and the Nenets.
From this evidence it is conceivable that the aboriginal inhabitants of Ireland ultimately may came from Siberia since that is where all the Finno-Ugrian peoples originally came from including the Finns, the Estonians, the Saami, etc.
Further if you compare genetic distance of the Irish to some Eastern populations (Sami distance in brackets):
Irish vs Mari/Komi 159 (248)
Irish vs Nenets 340 (353)
Irish vs Nganasan 392 (409)
Irish vs Mongols 338 (339)
The Irish are closer related to the Sami's linguistic brothers in the East than the Sami are. The distance to the Mongols are the same.http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/th/read/GENEALOGY-DNA/2006-12/1166559683
