Kovač is Croat from Bosnia-Herzegovina and many trolls speculated about his Hunnic/Avar origin, but his haplogroup is probably Illyrian (subclade of J2b2-L283) and present in Croatian lands since bronze age.

This guy looks to me like he could be riding into battle horseback from the Steppe right alongside my father. However, I bet autosomally he is within the normal Croatian cluster. Likely a good example of a divergence of phenotype and genotype.

All Kovaci from the Parish of Ljubuncic in Livno descend from the same man. He was originally from the Parish of Mostarsko Blato in Hercegovina (Ljuti Dolac, which now falls under Siroki Brijeg, towards the City of Mostar). They arrived in Livno at the end of the 18th century from Dalmatia where they had a short stay (common story). My grandmother comes from this family. Their patriarch settled in the village of Ljubuncic which is where our Parish is located. One of his descendants, Luka, moved to Lusnic, one village to the northwest, where my mother was born. My mother's mother was born in the house next to where Robert and Niko Kovac's father was born and where they still have a house and frequently visit. One of Luka's son's moved to Celebic, three villages to the Northwest of Lusnic. This branch of the Kovac family is known as the Lukinovici, and my paternal grandmother is one of them.

The Kovac's mother is a Barun like my mother (and my mother's mother).

We have two tested Kovacs (one of whom is 101 years old and lives in Zapresic, just west of Zagreb) from this parish with one having done his BigY. They are J-PH1602.

Very interesting man, cheers.

Their father's side was known for that nose. Their father's brother played soccer with my father for a local team and he was considered the best of his generation by far. Their father, not so much ;)
