In a similar way Riga is considered the capital of the Baltics and Brussels the capital of Europe.

Most people don't think of Greece when they think of the Balkans, but I guess it's "officially" part of the Balkans, same with Romania.

1. Athens
2. Bucharest
3. Belgrade or Sarajevo

I voted for Belgrade because it was the capital of Socialist Yugoslavia which was the last Balkan country to have an absolute hegemony over all the Balkans. The city is making a comeback with Serbia's economy seeing a recovery and a much surer path towards the EU with the apprehension of Mladic. Not to mention the strategic location of Belgrade which gives it a lot of value.

Serbia joining the EU will ensure a more quicker economic development of Belgrade. Belgrade has the potential to become the London (excluding all that Paki/Arab mess, of course) of the Balkans and it will when it joins the EU.

Istanbul, no doubt... all the bad habits in the Balkans come from the years of Turkish rule. let's look at the lower classes in the Balkans - the way they dress (I mean kitsch and cheap), the way they spit sunflower seeds on the street, the Turkish-influenced music they listen (turbofolk, manele, chalga), the strong minority Turkish-looking. Istanbul is the capital city of the Balkans. anyway all these give it a special charm. Balkans are for sure an interesting place to visit

great Balkanic band mostly tributary to Sarajevo

In my individual case, it's with help of American money. :rotfl Anyways, who pissed in your cheerios? Sure, some European money will have a role in helping our economy lift off and gain the ability to be independent but that's as far as it'll go. We're not like Bulgaria where all European financial assistance goes down a mysterious whirlpool with corrupt politicians taking their share. :coffee:

Only a minority of Serbian politicians does that. Tadic will take care of the traitors and throw them in Russian jails. :D

Minority? Well, from this I can tell you definitely don't live in Serbia and have no idea what's happening here. We got so much donations and took so much credits till now and people in Serbia didn't see anything of it. Also, we have the smallest salaries of all ex-Yu countries, and yes even Macedonians have bigger!

To start with, Germany is not northern european. And second, Southern European countries contribute far more than all Northern-European countries together. And third, some northern countries are also in rebuilding mode, like the Baltics. Get off your pedestal.

Actually Poland and Czech Republic get loads of money because of their big populations. And they are as "northern" (central) as Germany

That will mostly be due to the damage done to Serbia's infrastructure and growth by European bombs and economic sanctions.

I said Athens. Greece may not be the country associated with the Balkans first, however.

I think that instead of Athens,Thessaloniki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thessaloniki)should be included in that list.
