I'm a mod in a Vietnamese forum, Vietrealm.com

I like the Vietnamese, they're very industrious, proud, friendly and accomplished but sometimes they're also chauvinistic and sometimes lack open-mindedness.

Isn't the last one a general Asian problem ? ;) (the Philippines seems to have less of that.. for now).

In contrast, Vietnamese are prim and proper and cherish their pure and ancient native traditions, like some kind of self respecting Frigid woman.

That sums up the Philippines, yes. Tagalog is just like English that it doesn't just accept foreign words, it's stalks people down dark alleyways, knocks them unconscious and rifles their pockets for new vocabulary.

My favorite Filipino exclamation is "Putang Ina Mo!"

Ina is a contraction from the Aztec Nanay/Nana, Puta is Spanish but the addition of the Ng affix is a Chinese innovation, Mo is a Malay word.

Sums up our whore language the best.

Way better than the respectable English, "Fuck You" which isn't really as dirty and whorish enough when compared to the grand harlot, Tagalog.

"Putang Ina Mo!"
It might be a good idea for me to continue refraining from using such terms around my better half... ;)

Lmo. It is very funny. I did not know that tagalog got some words of the spanish vocabulary.

I believe Vietnam has opened its markets since the 80s. They knew Soviet style communism wouldn't work for them
Their main objective was to liberate and unify the whole Vietnam by exploiting the Soviet support. Some important socialist reformations were implemented (distribution of land, access to free healthcare and education, etc) but they would never see themselves becoming like North Koreans

So, after being in Vietnam for some time now, we've learned quite a bit. Here are 10 things we were pretty surprised to learn about the country we are getting to know pretty well, Vietnam.

No joke, Northern Vietnam has been relentlessly polluted and it makes me feel like I'm riding through Beijing!
