spark notes a few books on it. I used sparknotes all through university.

a good start would be to examine the forces, sparta also allied itself with persia, they did a lot to undermine athens empire. athens had a superior navy but an expeditionary force sent out by athens was crushed, athens was a democracy, sparta was an oligarchy they each had their supporters. ect ect, wikipedia is your friend

Because Sparta destroyed the Athenian fleet during their attack on Syracuse and the failure of the Athenians to capture Syracuse was pretty much their final failure at that point.
