Which one would you recommend and could you give some pros and cons for each lab?

YSEQ seems to have a fast service at a competitive price that FTDNA can't beat. So, is FTDNA giving more value for the money? If so, how?

I contacted Thomas from YSEQ and explained that so far I only know that my y-dna is R1b1b2a1a2f*\R1b-L21* and he replied:

"I clearly suggest the YSEQ R1b-L21 Superclade Orientation Panel for you:
https://www.yseq.net/product_info.php?cPath=27&products_id=4321

It covers about 1000 subclades downstream of R1b-L21."

I can tell you a little about YSEQ as I submitted my sample back in December - the process is slow. Took a month for my sample to get to their lab in Germany. It's been processing now since January and every so often they send me an email updating my subclade but as of today they still haven't found my terminal subclade yet. I can't understand why it takes so long. So, it's a slow process whether it is YSEQ or FTDNA I think.

One is an STR test while the other is an SNP test, so it depends on what you're more interested in.

He would definitely benefit from using YSEQ since he's in Europe. Took me like 1 day to receive the test kit and around 2-3 days for them to get it back. They test the most common clades first and if you're negative for those they probably need to order new chips for the rarer ones. I belong to a rare clade of U152 so it also took a while for me to get my final results.

What is happening if someone belongs to a non-discovered yet subclade? Can the FTDNA or YSEQ pinpoint it?

Only FTDNA, but then you'd have to do the Big-Y test (unless you also include the full genome test at YSEQ).

Big-Y costs a pile of money. So full genome at YSEQ can pinpoint non-discovered subclade, is it the same expensive?

Good point. And thank you for explaining the process. I imagine that is what is happening in my case (ordering new chips) as my clade is also rare.

YSEQ is even more expensive, as it tests your whole genome. If you want to discover a new clade then you don't have a choice but to spend a lot of money.

What does YSEQ provide you after you've been tested? Any BAM. file that we can upload to the YTree?

They provide you with your results on your profile. If you want the BAM file I think you can mail them and ask for it. I haven't done so yet but I can do it to see if they send me anything if you want.

Sorry to hear that. You're the first person I have seen complaining about the process being slow regarding YSEQ to be honest, most people got their results pretty quickly (when in comparison with other companies).

That would be nice. You're not interested in uploading your results to the YTree?

Could you also do a screenshot of the results provided in your profile? Just for me to have an idea of how their interface looks like.

I honestly never really considered it since I'm already on the Serbian DNA project. I might reconsider as I've got curious :p

So you have been tested under FTDNA and YSEQ? Prices aside, which one gave you the most positive experience and results overall?

Just get full genomes if you are worried about subclade

Full genome sequencing is too expensive. The advantage with FTDNA is that you can "climb up the ladder" and upgrade whenever you want.
