The Wikipedia article on flash mobs is far from perfect, but it does provide a definition, and it does admit that they have been used to facilitate criminal activity. However, criminal flash mobs have appeared in other American cities at other times.


A flash mob (or flashmob) is a group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, perform an unusual and sometimes seemingly pointless act for a brief time, then disperse, often for the purposes of entertainment and/or satire. Flash mobs are organized via telecommunications, social media, or viral emails.

United States

In the United States, in 2009 and 2010, the city of Philadelphia experienced a wave of flash mobs that either started with the intent or led to the destruction of private property, rioting, violence, and personal injury. As a result, police used pepper spray to disperse crowds and arrests were made. Law makers and lobbyists in the city are pursuing enacting bylaws to counter flash mobs by extending curfew hours, limiting the hours of bus passes, and holding parents more accountable for the actions of their children. Bill Wasik (the creator of the first flash mob) has expressed "surprise by the new focus of some of the gatherings" and called it "terrible that these Philly mobs have turned violent".

Next time you notice a critical mass of young people gathering in a store, it might not be that kind of flash mob typically associated with those funny social media pranks ... What may about to go down is some en masse shoplifting.

Perhaps these youth have been listening to too much Boostin' Kev, the '90s rapper whose underground track 'That Be Boostin' detailed the five-finger discount missions of his fellow Polo fanatics. But it's obvious someone's going to get hurt during one of these flash mob crime sprees.

In London they (the primates) call it "Steaming".They go through a tube (the underground) yanking handbags off of women and gold chains from around peoples necks etc....or through shops grabbing everything.
If the least sign of resistance is observed a mass beating will ensue.


What i usually do is carry a small bag of sea shells around with me and throw them on the floor in front of the primates....they usually stop and start playing with the seashells until a gamekeeper can be called with some tranquilizer darts and a huge net,they can be gathered up and taken back to the monkey enclousre at London zoo.
This behaviour can be observed at one of the primates mass breading grounds,The notting hill carnival at a certain time of the year where huge amounts of different species of primate converge like magnets drawn to the sound of beating drums.
Smaller species of primates observe the same activity at some of the safari parks dotted around England,but they stick to ripping windscrean wipers off of cars and snapping car arials off....they can usually be got rid of by throwing a few peanuts out of the window as a treat.

That undesirables eventually will attach themselves to some new, attractive and innovative phenomenon, to pursue a minimally altered version of the same moronic act they perform compulsively over and over again, (because they cannot do anything else) seems to be the universal drawback of all modern urban (not to mention online) life. That applies equally to flash mobs, cool up-and-coming preservationist discussion fora, as well as everything else. ;)
