Cool map, shows how everyone was wrong about R1a origins when trying to predict it based on modern samples:

Why did he leave M458 up in the air and kept going further downstream for other clades? It’s a great effort but seems incomplete .

Basically Eastern and Northeastern Europe.

More like Ural Mountains. The content in the OP doesn't prove thats where it originated nonetheless. Same as those clade origin predictors.

Well, you have even less proof here. Basically making a damn wild guess based on nothing.

By the way, I didn't even say "originated". But the fact is, all four pre-CW samples are from Ukraine, European Russia and Estonia.

Based on what?

If you read the comments section, you can see that Davidski included in his map only samples which are 100% confirmed as R1a. There are few more very old samples which are probably R1a, including some from Lake Baikal area, but also some from Maykop and Yamnaya.

So basically Eastern Europe and Northern Caucasus are the most probable areas where it originated.

Purported R1a samples from Lake Baikal area are younger than the oldest R1a from Ukraine anyway:

It's time for a new R1a study. But it seems like Peter Underhill has fallen asleep.
