I'm hoping to be able to test my mom at some point, with the main goal of making some genealogical discoveries with DNA matches. I'm probably going to go with AncestryDNA, but does anyone know which test is more popular in Germany? That's where I would expect a lot of relatives, though some have undoubtedly migrated here as well.

Most foreign people are testing with My Heritage now and it's not even close.

Really. That test seems really inaccurate, as far as the ethnicity estimate anyway. But good to know. Thanks for the comment.

Yea, I uploaded my raw data from Ancestry.com and was surprised at the number of European matches I had. Almost 900 from Norway alone. Only about 200 from Germany but it is my understanding that DNA tests are not quite as popular in Germany or France as they are in Scandinavia.

Was that really free, like the site says? Testing with Ancestry would be the way to go then.

Yup. It was when I did that back in December.

That's actually a lot of people.

Yes their admixture calculator sucks but you were wanting to find German matches. They are there. If you were on 23 or Ancestry you would be lucky to have fifty or sixty matches.

851 from Norway and 127 from Germany. Some “closer” matches in Denmark, Sweden and the Netherlands too

That is a lot. Compare it to other services and you would realize it quickly.

Seems like 1/2 the Swedes are female Instagram models

This girl and her father show up as “3rd-5th” cousins and I also match with his niece too. So there’s a real genetic connection here.

My Heritage has a pretty small database compared to 23andme and Ancestry. The latter both ship to Germany, but neither are popular on account of high shipping prices. I would ask on a German genealogical forum instead.
