Is there a specific test that will test just your mother's paternal side? I took the Family Tree DNA Maternal test, and as far as I can gather it only traces your mother's mother's mother's mother's , female only etc. family. Isn't there any test available that will test both your mother's paternal and maternal side?

Your mother's father, your uncles (your mother's brothers) and also your cousins (mother's brothers sons) will all share the same Y-DNA haplogroup, if that's what you are asking? Testing any of them will give you that information.

It would be interesting. My mothers father died before i was born. There is no way to know the y-dna through other relatives.

My mother's father is dead, and she was an only child. My mother is dead too. When I took a maternal DNA test, I assumed it would include both my mother's parents. Apparently, it does not.
I'm looking for genetic markers on both sides, but mainly my mother's paternal side, because that is where my Native American ancestry comes from.

I'm sorry to hear they all have passed. The only way you can find out in this case is thru your grandfather's male siblings. Or even your great-grandather's brother's male decedents. This can be very difficult of course. Good luck.

If your mother has brothers, test one of her brothers. Or another relative who is descended from the same male lineage as your mother's father.
For example if your maternal grandfather had a brother, maybe that brother's male descendants can be tested today?

Maybe, can you trace one of your male second cousins to your maternal grandfather, great-grandfather, or great uncle?

I don't want to ask them to take a DNA test. If they end up taking one, that would be nice. I haven't kept up with them in years. My grandfather had a sister and that was all. His side of the family is the most interesting, IMO.

They have the same surname as your mom's dad and are descended from the same male ancestor?

We both have the same Great Grandparents- so, not exactly.
