I doubt that Nicola is a common name in Germany / Austria (at least in men), maybe it's Russian.
Andrea for example is a femenine name in Spain / Hispanoamerica and masculine in Italy.

Nikola is a common mens name in parts of europem, like Tesla. Nicholas is the version in the UK that we usually use for men. Nicola is usually used for women here.
