McDonald's is synonymous with fast-food in many parts of the world, but there is one country where it's failed to capture national attention. Iceland celebrated the fast-food chain when it entered in 1993, but a global economic collapse during the next 15 years forced McDonald's to exit the Nordic region. Watch this video to find out more.

I think that we, in the Netherlands, should chase out Starbucks, McDonald's, KFC, Pizza Hut and Burger King. We don't need those multinationals. In fact: we would be better off helping our own local brands and small restaurants which cater more to our local needs and our local tastes.

That's more like it ! And then we still have Febo or many of its open sandwich shops and bakeries like Bakker Bart.

Neither does most of Europe. Even Iceland now has its own brewing industry. Here in the Netherlands - they sell (American) Budweiser in some pubs and I remember buying a can. That was a one time experience. That's no beer ! That watered down horse piss is worse than Heineken (and that should tell you something !)

The only times I've been to McDonald's the last 15 years, have been to order a coffee to go. I really can't understand some people's liking for that kind of food.

It really depends on the country. In Serbia McDonalds is good because it's locally sourced.

Top 10 countries with no McDonald's. In Algeria and Macedonia, they have for example... administrative difficulties, I'm loving it.

Mcdonalds is great; love a big mac with fries and a strawberry milkshake. Do prefer local fried chicken places like Chicken Cottage to Mcdonalds tho.

This will never happen, NL is full of foreigners and its the densiest country in Europe. I dont think they would be able to get rid of those companies.

I think we can. McDonald's came only late to the party here too. As for the others: even later. As for foreigners: I don't see many expats go there and the migrants ? They need to be deported anyway.

I went to one by chance recently and their food was surprisingly delicious, best chicken nuggets and french fries I had in a while!

mcdonalds and starbucks closed most of their shops in Athens because they couldnt compete with souvlaki shops and local coffee shops .

It may be a sign that Island economy is not doing well.

I've been to some of these fast-foods chains, Burger King and McDonald's were particularly nice, and I was kind of surprised by their presentations.
My problem with big restoration and fast-foods is their un-ethical charts and financial frauds.

Why not the opposite? I think they are one of the rarest countries to maintain a great life quality.

If Island is not making it difficult for US companies (crisis 2008), I would say yes!

McDonald's, competes with the local food market, there may have been a drop in customer flow.

Iceland was right to impose economic protections, American companies don't respect tax laws, and US president is now doing the same anyway.

why MCShit with his beef with antibiotics and hormones failed in the country of pinguins, because is a small country of 338.000 inhabitants and island too,and who gave a damn shit of tasteless food when you eat at home good icelandic food, frankly i don't know the fenno-scandian and icelandic food but it seems than they have good tests and loves there trationnal nordic food, and when it's the happy hour of the pinguins like minus 15 or 20 outside, you are not "hot" to go outside picking some greasy french fries, coke, and burgers made of 2 breads two piece of vegetables and cheese, frankly i think than even hollywood canteen is better if you want real traditionnal burgers,it seems it's old fashion like in the movies, all the junk food channels are falling like quick(belgium) burger king disappearing since some few years and with a light come back for the more known the only time i were in MCshit is was for the free wifi with coffee(s),coffee is the only good thing than mcshit does,i have spend many days at a period always at the same spot for a strong signal
it seems than it's a sporty and healty people too,i don't seen them very well at mcshit, the only town where mchsit could open a few places is reyjiavik(128.000),and frankly it's seems than they haven't so much US "franchises" aside coca,it 's like anywhere sure you have some but it's very limited

fun fact french food is more appreciated in the US,than junk food ,i have heard testimonies at the radio of buisness/cookers who settle at LA or NY and who are "killers", i have even met a french guy in belgium who does french cakes at 20$ ,a true "killer",but i think than is the case for any high rank european cookers
