View Full Version : Can you predict who will go bald early in life?

Back in 2007, I saw pictures of my 10 year high school reunion. What I noticed was, the boys who had amazingly thick hair when they were in high school were either thinning out or balding by the time they were in their late 20s. Those with average looking locks still had a full head of hair. Myself included. Is that one way to tell?

I suffer from mediocre hair syndrome. I still have a full head of hair, but my hair has always been very very fine. So when I cut my hair, you can see my scalp in bright light , even though my hair is not thinning, and I don't have a receding hairline. It has been that way forever. Meanwhile those with "John Stamos" (he was Uncle Jessie on "Full House") quality hair in their teen years, seem to lose all theirs, while mediocre hair sufferers keep what we have. Could this be a plausible theory?

If you are sensitive to DHT you will lose your hair faster than others.

True. But can we tell who will go bald by looking at pictures of their hair patterns as teenagers? I notice the ones with the best hair in their teenaged years seem to actually go thinner earlier.

the kid who got the moustache at the end of elementary school is probably a fine candidate.

You can't really tell untill the hairline start receeding, then you know.
Looking at parents and grandparents help too.

Yes, it is not just the higher testosterone =/= the more likely is balding, or early balding. My friend started balding when he was 24, ouch.

There are some therapies, ointments and shampoos that can help you if you notice this problem early on but not sure how efficient they really are.

Yes, its just a myth that high testosterone makes people go bald when its in natural limits without PED.

You can't always tell by looking. Some people may look like their balding but might just have shitty hairlines. Having thick hair in high school does not determine anything in regards to the future.

There is a myth that wearing a cap too often will cause it too. :picard1: In fact, it is underdevelopment / hypoplasia and not shortage of hair follicles that directly causes this.

Propecia (oral drug) & Rogaine drug can help actually as in having scientifically proven functioning, but both have their side-effects. The former of the two lowers your libido.

I agree. The first candidates for baldness are those who, at the age of 19, already have a rather hairy chest and a more or less uniform beard. It is simply the hereditary susceptibility of the follicles in the androgen-dependent zones to dihydrotestosterone, and not an increased "virility".
For some reason, dihydrotestosterone kills the follicles on the head, developing in other places.
I was able to grow all this only by the age of 25, but I am still in the risk zone, taking into account the genetics on the maternal side:D.

In fact, testosterone promotes hair growth, the main problem is DHT, which is an agressive form of testosterone. High levels of DHT are also main reasons of prostate cancer

No way to predict by looking at the hair at a young age. You can sort of guess though, if there are a lot of bald men in the family, that you will be more likely to lose your hair. My dad had no inkling of hair loss until his early 40's yet I started with a receding hairline in my 20's. I really don't believe any of the applicable products, pills, or potions work very well. I never bothered with them. And I agree with the above comments, I think all you need is testosterone in the normal range + the DHT sensitive folicles. I will say my hair loss has stabilized in recent years. I am not completely bald, I'm only mostly bald. (That's sort of a 'Princess Bride' reference, btw) ;)

It does in high levels that is over the normal value.
Testosterone levels are not much higher or lower in ethnicities around the world yet some are hairless and some monkey tier, thats all genetics and nothing about testosterone within normal levels.
