They have very high R1b and low R1a for Balkan standards. Interesting I2 and I1 are higher and E-V13 is lower than among Bulgarians.

Pomak most probably comes from "pomagayne" which means helping to someone, Ottomans called them like that because they willingly accepted Islam and helped Ottomans in Islamization. Most logical theory imo

Yeah you're right, there's a guy from Mandritsa with what i thought was a Pomak name, but it's an Albo village apparently.

There's diversity so far in the I2 tested; I'll have to look up the R1B clades as I don't know them off the top of my head, i'm guessing it's mainly Balkan r1b not germanic or celtic though.

I think he's referencing their origin by YDNA through the paternal lines. Not their actual ancestry in recent history. Based on what we currently know R1b-BY611>Z2705 is most common/diverse in Albanians. Additionally, it only has a TMRCA of 1500ypb. This is almost around the exact time that most Albanians trace their ancestry through a tightly knit population. Both autosomally and by the YDNA.

Much like PH908 for Serbs, Z2705 is almost a surefire indication of Albanian origin. Unless he belongs further downstream, his Albanian progenitor lived around 1500ypb.

I didn’t say they aren’t Pomaks. I was talking about their origins. We have a cousin under R1b-BY611>Z2705>Y32147 that’s almost purely Saudi Arabian autosomally, but of course paternally he has distant Albanian origins. Get with the program and stop referencing useless gedmatch calculators

Thanks for approving my membership. I found this post while researching my Haplogroup r-by33316. I am in the USA and it appears my y heritage is POMAK and now I discover Smolyan. As far as I know my heritage is Scandanavian. On FTDNA I have one match with another person with R-by33316 and he is Bulgarian with a POMAK ancestor. So if anyone has any advice on how I can pursue my research I would appreciate it because I am quite surprised by this development. DNA sure can surprise.
