Almost 80 Percent Of The World’s Flower Bulbs Come From The Netherlands!

The majority of which are tulips, making it the world’s leading tulip exporter.

In 2017 the tulip industry is expected to hit 2 million blooms for the first time,
grown alongside millions of other blooms, all primarily for export (around 90 percent).

Thousands of people flock to see the beautiful fields as they grow;
Haarlem is home to many commercial fields as well as a Flower Parade and Keukenhof park,
which display hundreds of flower varieties.

All new tulips varities are recorded by the Koninklijke Algemeene Vereeniging voor Bloembollencultuur (KAVB),
which lists more than 8,000 types.

Every third Saturday in January, the Dutch celebrate National Tulip Day
– the official start of the tulip season – with free flower picking and flower festivals.

(Needless to say.... the national flower of the Netherlands is the tulip.)

I'm no fan of dandelions either. They fuck up your garden (along with many roadsides).

Flowers are OK, but let them stop spreading vegetable seeds! For example tomato varieties from the Netherlands are so tasteless I would ban them completely.

Dandelion & Burdock is a very popular soft drink in the U.K. I used to love this lightly carbonated soft drink as a child... along with Sarsaparilla root soft drink. I still very much like the soft flavour of Dandelion & Burdock, although my favourite soft beverage is elderflower drink.

https://cdn1.padimax.com/images/fm_dandb.jpg

'Dandelion and burdock is a beverage consumed in the British Isles since the Middle Ages.'

'It was originally a type of light mead, but over the years has evolved into the carbonated soft drink commercially available today. Traditionally it was made from fermented dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) and burdock (Arctium lappa) roots, hence the name.'

Dandelion and burdock shares a historical origin with a number of drinks originally made from lightly fermented root extracts, such as root beer and sarsaparilla, supposedly as a health benefit.

More than 60 percent of the Netherlands is agriculture and horticulture

The country is one of the world’s biggest exporters, despite it’s small size, competing again China, the US and Germany. In 2016 the Netherlands was the world’s second largest exporter of agriculture goods, after the US, reaching a record EUR 94 billion. It is also one of the world’s largest exporter of seeds, live trees, plants, bulbs, roots and cut flowers.

Legend also has it that the Dutch introduced orange carrots to the world. Dutch carrot growers developed orange carrots around the 16th century through careful breeding of existing varieties. At the time, carrots were a range of colours, from pale yellow to purple.

Tulip fields in Norfolk, East Anglia, England (in the pictures below.) It's a lowland area of eastern England (also known as The Fenlands,) close to the North Sea and the area has lots of windmills and tulip fields.

East Anglia is a geographical area in the East of England. The area included has varied but the legally defined NUTS 2 statistical unit comprises the counties of Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire, including the City of Peterborough unitary authority area. The name derives from the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of the East Angles, a tribe whose name originated in Anglia, northern Germany.

Although the English tudor red rose is our official national flower, tulips are also very popular and are sold a lot here each year as there's a high demand for them amongst the English.
