(2) For the umpteenth time, no the USA was not 90% White - African-Americans have always been 10-15% of the population since the 19th century. (3) It is indeed quite likely that older generations of White Americans were more separate and distinct by ethnic origin, thus those who were of British, Irish, German, Dutch or Scandinavian descent were much more likely to marry within their community than is the case nowadays. (Irish-Italian marriages in particular are very common, in fact).
