IT is not known, now, for what length of time the Tuatha de Danaan had the sway over Ireland, and it is likely it was a long time they had it, but they were put from it at last.

It was at Inver Slane, to the north of Leinster, the sons of Gaedhal of the Shining Armour, the Very Gentle, that were called afterwards the Sons of the Gael, made their first attempt to land in Ireland to avenge Ith, one of their race that had come there one time and had met with his death.

Lol, that was unexpected. Figured I was way off base. Figure that result came about in that the only thing I had to base my attempt off of was my experiences when my aunt and uncle would visit from Lisburn as opposed to mainland Scots.

It's not surprising. The Northern Irish are what the American's call the Scots-Irish. A Northern Irish accent can sound half Irish and Half Scottish. It helps that you sound a bit rough too. Ye'd make a good Ulsterman. :D

Lá amháin bhí fear bocht ag siúl abhaile nuair a chonaic sé mála beag ar an talamh. Phioc sé suas é agus d' oscail sé é. Bhí ionadh an domhain air nuair a chonaic sé cad a bhí istigh ann -- cúig nóta deich bpunt. Cad ba cheart dó a dhéanamh leis?

One day a poor man was walking home when he saw a small bag on the ground. He picked it up and he opened it. The surprise of the world was on him when he saw what was inside -- 5 ten pound notes. What was the right thing to do with this?

I used to have a Toshiba Satellite, but mine would have been almost 6 years old now. I don't know how old yours is, but you may need to get a microphone for it. Alternatively, if you have headphones, you could try plugging those into the microphone jack & speaking into them. It might work.

In terms of mastering pronounciation - certainly. Even now there are not that many places in Russia where people can learn how to speak more or less proper English or British American. My school was uber Anglophile and we even had ridiculus school uni that was supposed to resemble "native" British dress. So up until going abroad I had somewhat Brit accent. Later it got Americanized.

Here many people emigrate, so there are many places and teachers.
When I studied English at school I noticed that most people who go to A level courses (there are A and B courses, you pick one of the two yourself) don't have typical Eastern European accent, though everyone had less or more individual pronounciation. I think here it mosty depends on your own willingness to learn English, not many people took additional (outside of school) lessons.

yonder
c.1300, from O.E. geond (see yond) + comp. suffix -er. Now replaced except in poetic usage by ungrammatical that.

beyond
O.E. begeondan "beyond, from the farther side," from be- "by," here probably indicating position, + geond "yonder" (prep.); see yond. A compound not found elsewhere in Germanic.

yond
O.E. geond (adv., prep.) "beyond, yonder," related to geon (see yon).

yon
O.E. geon (adj.) "that (over there)," from P.Gmc. *jaino- (cf. O.Fris. jen, O.N. enn, O.H.G. ener, M.Du. ghens, Ger. jener, Goth. jains "that, you"), from PIE pronomial stem *i- (cf. Good, but with a few little things from other dialects and sociolects thrown in! :D There's a lot of flavour from a more lower middle class SE accent, especially evident in 'cheese'. The vowel in 'bag' isn't quite the posh 'ae' thing that I associate with RP, being more similar to my own pronunciation rather. And 'plaaastic' sounds like West Country, almost!

The one that sounds really really awful was just a joke, I cannot pronounce this language at all. The only language of these I know is Chechen obviously.

Was wanting to do a recording to illustrate how a phone conversation would go about in my family however I felt like a boob talking to myself convo style so I figured to try to write it out instead. Our informal conversations are way more lax and stress our dialect more so than the more formalish examples I've posted so far (I say formalish in that I'm not engaged in a conversation with a familiar person or family member and am reading from a book or page of tongue twisers or something along those lines so a lot of our speech oddities get lost in those examples).

On our r's: Depending on the word the r letter is either heavily pronounced like in fer/for, her, thar/there, etc... but not so heavily pronounced as in howse/horse, drawuh/drawer, showa/shower.

Caller: Eidy, figured I’d babble atchee ‘n see whad’sgownown.
Recip: Nowt much on, burnin’ daylight fer moonshine. *Nowt pronounced like note in sticky note.
Caller: Steady by jerks uh?
Recip: Eiup. (pronounced eeip or eeoop)
Caller: Can dig it.
Recip: Wihd a number two spade?
Caller: Eiup.
Recip: ’bout yerself?
Caller: Auh, over the hill but ain’t quite under it yet.
Recip: Whahdsit yer paps used to say, 'bout to be singin’ on the hilltop and ye ain’t gonna hear a note?
Caller: Ain’t got my leg quite’it far in the ground.
Recip: Well, gowna letchee off now, stomachs startin’ a rile and gotta finish up some junk, geet it done.
Caller: Et somethin’ spoilt?
Recip: Na
Caller: Ye see a doctor? *Doctor is sometimes said as dokker
Recip: Eiup

First one is obviously Adyghe. Lat one is without a doubt Balkar. I have a trouble distinguish Nakh-Dagestan languages between each other. I'll go with second being Avar(seems to have Georgian like k' there and that is smth I know to be characteristic of Avar) and third Chechen.

3. Avar
4. Balkar

Northern Limburg. I wouldn't have guessed that since I used to live in Heibloem where people spoke Limburgic. Only a few miles north towards Meyel would it become more like Brabantic.

Azalea
03-13-2012, 03:50 PM
But I read somewhere that our dialect is considered to be more 'Brabants' than actual 'Limburgs'. So you were very close with your guess really and tbh, I don't know much about other Northern Limburg dialects.

That's probably because it's in the border region. It's in that area where the dialects begin to change from Brabantic to Limburgic. Basically what you can see when you travel to the Alsace-Lorraine where there are all these shades of grey before one goes from French to German.

Hmm my advise would be that if you would have some time to visit neighbouring villages - basically following the route Weert- River Meuse (without leaving Limburg) and then follow the Meuse South towards Venlo and Roermond and then listen at the way people speak - you will hear the accent change when you go deeper into the province.

Northern Limburg (North of Venlo) could also be interesting if you would go down from Nijmegen towards Venlo.

There's a peculiarity in the family speech that I've not been able to find origin for, the folks in my family in our normal tongue say windle instead of window, in order to reconstruct to a degree I say windah but still feel the "windle" wanting to slip out.

From ole pappy RIP:

"Best way to clean a windle is ta break out the glass, ain't no clearer sight".

I wonder if this may be related somehow to the tendency to say "bolth" for "both."

I say "bolth" unreflexively. I have to be thinking about it to say "both" correctly. Somehow the "long o" diphthong [oʊ] gets an intrusive "dark l" [ɫ] to become [oɫ] or [ɔɫ]. Dunno how or why.

For us it's more like bowth, some of those with impediments say bowf.

Another oddity is the tendency to say own't for don't, I only do it on occasion and have for the most part weeded it out of myself but some family members still say it with prejudice so to say. :P

I own't know, leds'ave bowth.
