You reckon?? I think it's probably cos a lot of my friends were relatively posh so they corrected me when for example I didn't pronounce the 't' in words such as party, better, Peter..

Yes, 'chetos' tend to pronounce the 'y' and 'll' sound like the 's' in 'vision' (in English). They also have a nasal tone and there are some words that are less enunciated, like 'boludo', which becomes 'boló'

I grew up in the south midlands and went to school there. I went to uni outside of the UK. Southern England is lovely I agree, but there are some nice cities in the north too- I've been to York and Harrogate which were both attractive, particularly York. The countryside also gets more dramatic further north. I like both :)

Having gone to great excesses
I sit and wait - you begin the game
What you’re doing drives me insane
My cock is rising to the north
Balls now going back and forth
We’re all working up a sweat
Your nipples getting very erect
Those little grunts and screams you make
Are really more than I can take
I think that now I’m obsessed

What?!?!?!?!? HOW DARE YOU.

J.k, no its not really offensive. Its a bit odd though that you would say it sounds Russian, considering Albanian sounds harsher (at least in my opinion). Though I was speaking more along the lines of the Tosk Albanian dialect in that one (which is more soft and more modern). I also have a really odd voice so that might have contributed to why you think that :p

What is the linguistic reason?
It's seen as a working class thing in Scotland, closer to Glasgow. Possibly linked to some Gaelic dialect or from the Scots-English in the original inhabitants. That isn't known.

English is fairly messy in comparison to other language. There's not much rules & you can get all thses different accents in many areas.

T-glottalling in Glaswegian
Glasgow has a special place in any discussion of T-glottalling in English. It is reputed to be the original source of the glottal stop in urban British English.

Whether or not this derivation is correct, it is certainly the case that T-glottalling has been particularly noted as a highly-stigmatised feature of Glasgow vernacular speech since the nineteenth century.

A letter of 1892 notes:
'Strangers hurl at us a sort of shibboleth such sentences as 'pass the wa'er bo"le, Mr Pa'erson' .

The social stigma attached to T-glottalling is well illustrated in McAllister's tirade against 'this degenerate tendency in modem speech'; McAllister (1963: 71). Such attitudes were still rife when Macaulay carried out his work.

I added an English excerpt just so you know what it's about, I'm reading the same monologue in all the records. In the last one however,I could not find the 3 first sentences, so it's a bit shorter.

Hope it's not a problem.

Yes, I maybe tried to ennunciate a bit more and pay more attention to the sentence pauses than normally, but that is it really.

Your voice has a melancholy vibe to it, but I'm not sure I can pull many impressions about a person from their voice.

I don't know if you've ever played Dark Souls, but I feel like your voice would be a character in it.

Please call Stella. Ask her to bring these things with her from the store: Six spoons of fresh snow peas, five thick slabs of blue cheese, and maybe a snack for her brother Bob. We also need a small plastic snake and a big toy frog for the kids. She can scoop these things into three red bags, and we will go meet her Wednesday at the train station.

I know that most of you don't care but oh well

Out of curiosity, I asked some people from the UK what they thought I sound like - here's a very interesting reply:

"There are a few different accents in there to me - I used to teach English as a Foreign Language - English is not this woman's first language but she has learnt it from an American / living in America / American TV (maybe Canada) - from my first impression of the vowel sounds that are being used

1. the American 'drawl' Hel-oW
2. The short O sound as she says "Bob" to UK speaker it sounds BAHB

The 'fluency' where she says "Ask her to bring these things" and "We also need a small...." has a non English pace (here I don't mean she isn't clear and able to 'fluently' speak English, but that she has a non English pacing where she runs words that native speakers wouldn't into each other - there is a strong Ssk sound that she stresses in these parts

"Ssk hert obring" is what is heard not as a native speaker "Ask'er tabring" - her stress pattern is coming from her native tongue and is another sign this is not her first language (potentially her parents spoke a different language at home and grew up in the US? or moved later? As a child you can move between accents easily - but there are markers in your voice as an adult that can clearly place where you are from / language is your L1.

The clearest part of her original accent:

"Seeks poohns uv frish snuh peez" - (six pounds of fresh snow peas)

From this I want to say a Nordic accent (Maybe Danish / Norwegian) or Eastern European (sounds a little like Polish, but not completely)

But my knowledge of specifics in those countries is minimal - the only thing clear to me is that she is not American.

Unless they are a voice actor or a recording program, and really good at switching between several accents at once!

(Am I right?! I love analysing accents and am a trainee Speech and Language Thereapist / Speech Pathologist)

Also, SOOOOO not Australian, Irish, Scottish!!! haha! I can only guess that the people who guessed that are American and haven't heard many non American accents before - American TV has such bizarre versions of international accents (We don't sound anything like Mary Poppins characters in the UK or even like snooty posh "English" people that are always annoying in movies! - Listen to Hugh Laurie speaking normally, not in his 'HOUSE' accent, or Michael Cane they are more 'normal') ... I'm sticking more with Nordic region - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nordic_countries.

Edit - HA! just noticed that's how 'non English' that snow peas bit was - she was meant to be saying spoons not pounds! either way, she uses 'elision' (words running into each other in natural speech - FishUnChips for fish and chips) in a completely non standard English way, therefore non native English speaker.... she puts a break between words that would never happen with a native speaker. I stand by my Nordic countries accent".

It was fascinating :)

You have a nice sounding voice. :)

A paragraph from The Speech Accent Archive :P

Please call Stella. Ask her to bring these things with her from the store: Six spoons of fresh snow peas, five thick slabs of blue cheese, and maybe a snack for her brother Bob. We also need a small plastic snake and a big toy frog for the kids. She can scoop these things into three red bags, and we will go meet her Wednesday at the train station.

Mate how many times do I have to tell you,
It's not supposed to be an English accent, it's a melbourne australian accent. For someone with supposed Ashkenazim heritage, you're quite thick.
And I've listened to your recording, it's sound a lot like those faux
High society English accents I hear Australians use to mock british tourists. It sound like youre trying too hard, especially with the upward inflections which isn't supposed to be heard so easily nor in such frequency in queens accent. It's almost like a caricature of an English accent.

Dude, you're not native Australian, and your first language isn't English. Also, I've met 2 established members of this forum in person (Fortis in Arduis and Colonel Frank Grimes) who can verify I am who I say I am. Also I've been on the forum videochat many a time. Lmao...steriotypical British accent...lol....there's no such thing as a steriotypical British accent, only fake caricatures such yours and regional accents that differs across the British Isle. You should know, a Yorkshireman sounds different to and East Londoner who sounds different to someone in Chelsea. You even have different London accent. . And I've already said that " I'm not native". I'm only pissed that I have to repeat myself to an adult. And why is their an issue in being bilingual. Strange

Bilingualism is awesome. I speak 3.5 languages myself. Anyhow, thanks for clearing that up. What's your first language?

Yes, my accent is stereotypical in that when one imagines an English accent one thinks of mine. Of course our regional variability vis a vis dialects is very high.

Once again, I've told you forum members whom I've met. Both of them have been here at least 5 years. Fortis in Arduis is a long-term sustaining member personally known to Loki. My authenticity is not at question here. Do not accuse me of lying ever again.

You have a beautiful and soothing soft voice which is pleasant on the ears and a very nice Polish accent which sounds civilised and refined. I like it that Polish is now officially England's second language due to the amount of Polish people living here who speak it, as it's a lovely language. It's nice that we get to hear Polish accents regularly here in the UK too as I like to hear different accents. :)

We don't officially even have a first language. The only language with any kind of official status in the UK is Welsh (unless you count languages like Scots Gaelic that fall under the EU Minority Languages rules). Even English has no official standing. What you mean to say is, I'm happy more people speak Polish as a first language than any other language except English in the UK.
