Well someone said I sould like a Pakistani :D, and fun aside I do have a balkanian accent that my mother has been mocking me for since I was little :D

And you know what? I like it! I don't want to and I'm not supposed to sound English. I am supposed to sound like a Greek, ok? :p So go find someone else to pick on, people! :D

P.S. Oswiu had commented on that recording and maybe he can pinpoint what's wrong with my accent.

I have a West Coast California accent! :( I sound like all the surfer dudes, and valley girls. I sang soprano in high school, but my voice has deepened a little bit, and I now sing alto with more ease. I also have a slight nasal quality to my voice. And, I sometimes sound overly disparaging. *sigh* To make up for it, I can *do* other accents for fun, and am told that I'm quite good. I can do hillbilly, and Irish, Scottish, and English. I can also do a Hindi accent pretty good too. Australian is more of a challenge, as I'm not as famialiar with it. I have to placate my inner ham some how. :D

You don't sound like that in the slightest!

And you know what? I like it! I don't want to and I'm not supposed to sound English. I am supposed to sound like a Greek, ok? :p So go find someone else to pick on, people! :D

P.S. Oswiu had commented on that recording and maybe he can pinpoint what's wrong with my accent.
It was just particular words I commented on, as far as I can remember, not the general accent, which was very pleasant to hear. I am a professional in this sphere, but wouldn't dream of assisting anyone in suppressing their natural native sound - it just sounds so absurd to hear foreigners talking like a posh Englishman or like a specific class/region of Englishman, depending on who taught them or which Englishmen they spent time with!

I can *do* other accents for fun, and am told that I'm quite good. I can do hillbilly, and Irish, Scottish, and English.
You know, I'm dreading what it'll be like, but I've got to hear it!

Here's my voice. :thumb001:
I'm no expert, but the last few words had a bit of Southern in em, what did you say 'if that's alright' or something. Otherwise pretty neutral like Absinthe said. :thumb001:

I said, "Hi, this is Psychonaut. I used to have a pretty strong Southern accent, but I don't think I really have much of one any more. Maybe you guys think I do. I'd like to hear what you Yankees think about that."

What's the BEST way to record and host, people? I've got to join in.

Snag a copy of Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/). It's free, small and very user friendly. From there you can save your recording as a .wav file, put it in a .zip file and upload it directly to the forum.

I have noticed as I have gotten older, my southern accent gets a bit more.... Pronounced...

However, I can be neutral if I try, for job reasons.

I will see if I can record my voice sometime later.

Well ... (white) South Africans normally have two groups of accents, depending on whether their mother tongue is Afrikaans or English. The two accents are distinctive. Mine was probably already mixed when I left for England 10 years ago, since I had many English-speaking friends and went to an English-speaking church. But now, after 10 years in the UK, the South Africanness is wearing off a lot. When I meet more recent arrivals from SA, they think I am British by the accent. Yet to British ears they will detect something different still. I guess it never goes away completely, and is of course something unique, I like it. :thumb001:

I am not sure- I seem to speak generally standard Dutch but with a Hollandic or Utrecht (Central Dutch) pronunciation and sometimes a Brabantic soft G. But it seems to change all the time so I am not sure.
It's possibly because I have been moving all over the country.

When it comes to English I seem to speak standard English but sometimes a mild accent can be heard. When I have the proper programs I will record and post a sample.

You'll probably be disappointed. My sister stayed in London for 6 months, and after she came back, my brother and I were acting out Monty Python sketches for kicks, (because that's what we dorky kids do) and when I was doing my "well she turned me into a newt" line, Rachel turned and looked at me, and said, "You, know that that's not how they really talk right?" Talk about raining on my parade. To other Americans who have never really been over there, I sound convincing. But, to someone who really knows the dialect, I sound a bit like an ass. :laugh2: :pout:

I don't have a microphone unfortunately, so don't think I can get a clip of me talking unless I borrow someone else's. I think I speak like a typical Ontarian mostly, but since I've been in Newfoundland for the last four and a half years or so people back home say I've picked up some hints of the Newfie accent. Apparently, I over pronounce my r's now and some say my intonation has changed. Ontarian Newfie accent anyone? :icon_lol: Even though French is my first language I learned English when I was around 4 or so years old so French doesn't really leak into my English (although German is a different story. Most German teacher's I've had have told me I sound French when I speak German), but if it did then I'd have one hell of an accent :p

I can sort of impersonate it, but I haven't got my microphone at the moment, and shouting down my headphones probably wouldn't do it justice! :D

You probably don't get more Yorkshire than Brian Glover (the bald feller in the green coat and flat cap);

Here's the article I read.

Accents of Change

A couple of years ago a Professor of Phonetics at London University confirmed what West Country farmers have suspected for decades: their cows speak “Zummerzet”. Their moos, the research showed, had a distinctive twang—as distinctive, in fact, as the Scottish crossbill, the bird which sonograms now reveal attracts a mate from among the whole crossbill population by adopting a strong Highlands accent. The cockney quack of a London duck, we are told, is like a shout and a laugh, whereas Cornish ducks sound more like they are giggling.

LOL, how cute. :p

Basicly the only and most notable error in that is the pressing - in Finnish you say every word with the pressing on the first syllable, and there's never one at the second syllable of a continuous word (in contrast with the Latin languages f.ex.). Not like "minä-asuna-teenassa", but "minä-asun-Ateenassa.". And with the "iso ja lihava", the double S is actually wrong there, but otherwise it would be perfect pronounciation if it was a actually a double consonate there ("isso" ja lihava).

Overall not bad, though. :)

EDIT: Bloody hell, my hovership really IS full of eels!!:eek::eek:

Thanks for noticing. :thumbs up

Very heavy Dutch accent, low pleasant voice, grammar and sentence structure bordering on the rape of the English language(intentionally most of the times).
The Brits in South Africa immediately assess me for a dumb Dutchman/Afrikaner(which is my intention),but a bit into the conversation I let lose my dislike for the we know it all Brits, who some how think it is a classy act to speak with a hot potato in their mouth, looking down on the Arikaner.
The English-Irish-Scots in Europe are fine well liked characters.

I too have the West Coast California accent! I do have a bit of southern drawl to mine though. If I only had a microphone!
I originate from the Okie capitol of California. Think Grapes Of Wrath- John Steinbeck!
I will say certain Spanish words as if I was from Texas, dude!

This is how I talk when I'm nervous in front of a webcam. I reckon I have two tones, one for day to day convo, which is my typical Appalachian voice, and then there's this one for the general public, I cannot recreate my convo dialect for webcam, it's something that just happens when I'm talking to "familiars". .

My accent is a sort of West country, think of Somerset and Bristolian that is a mild version of the two.
Whist visiting America Mrs Germanicus and i shopped and intermingled a great deal, but i could not be understood all the time, whereas Mrs G was understood the whole time,at this i must point out she is from West Yorkshire. Her Shire is over 200 miles away. She tried to make fun of my accent and said that the yanks cannot understand me, to which i replied, my dear, i speak proper English, whereas you and the Americans speak gibberish, thats why they understand you.:D

:D I think it's just a gender thing though. Higher pitched voices, even with unfamiliar accents, are generally easier to make sense of. The enunciation is clearer, less deep rumbling and so on. And women often make more of an effort to sound less 'provincial', for whatever odd reason. I understand Russian women much easier than Russian men, when considering my second language, for instance.

I just read this Bob dylan's song I love

I Want You

The guilty undertaker sighs,
The lonesome organ grinder cries,
The silver saxophones say I should refuse you.
The cracked bells and washed-out horns
Blow into my face with scorn,
But it's not that way,
I wasn't born to lose you.
I want you, I want you,
I want you so bad,
Honey, I want you.

The drunken politician leaps
Upon the street where mothers weep
And the saviors who are fast asleep,
They wait for you.
And I wait for them to interrupt
Me drinkin' from my broken cup
And ask me to
Open up the gate for you.
I want you, I want you,
I want you so bad,
Honey, I want you.

Now all my fathers, they've gone down
True love they've been without it.
But all their daughters put me down
'Cause I don't think about it.

Well, I return to the Queen of Spades
And talk with my chambermaid.
She knows that I'm not afraid
To look at her.
She is good to me
And there's nothing she doesn't see.
She knows where I'd like to be
But it doesn't matter.
I want you, I want you,
I want you so bad,
Honey, I want you.

Now your dancing child with his Chinese suit,
He spoke to me, I took his flute.
No, I wasn't very cute to him,
Was I?
But I did it, though, because he lied
Because he took you for a ride
And because time was on his side
And because I . . .
I want you, I want you,
I want you so bad,
Honey, I want you.

Hey guys, I need you to read this extract out loudusing your regional intonation and pronunciation, when you do it, be sure to save this file and post it here; it's for my term paper :)
I hope that you won't be lazy to do it :p

Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens
Stave III
The Second of the Three Spirits

Awaking in the middle of a prodigiously tough snore, and sitting up in bed to get his thoughts together, Scrooge had no occasion to be told that the bell was again upon the stroke of One. He felt that he was restored to consciousness in the right nick of time, for the especial purpose of holding a conference with the second messenger dispatched to him through Jacob Marley’s intervention. But, finding that he turned uncomfortably cold when he began to wonder which of his curtains this new spectre would draw back, he put them every one aside with his own hands, and lying down again, established a sharp look-out all round the bed.

Aleksey, attached to this post you will find a file containing two versions of me reading the Christmas Carol text. In the former (ProperBr) I use my usual accent, whereas in the latter (ProperRu) I am trying to read it emphasising my regional (Muscovite Russian) intonation and accent, which makes me sound suspiciously like Ayn Rand.

That's an interesting observation, because I was told on a few occasions that I actually sound like I'm from West Midlands. On this (http://tinypic.com/player.php?v=s6lv1g&s=4) recording, for instance, I was compared to Clive Owens. Perhaps my accent fluctuates a lot, since it's not inherent, after all.

Thanks very much for the analysis.

I was reading an article on wikipedia...

In the British Empire, traditions of anti-Catholicism in Britain led to fears that Catholics were a threat to the national (British) values. In Canada, the orange Order (of Irish Protestants) campaigned vigorously against the Catholics throughout the 19th century, often with violent confrontations.[17] The Orange Order was much less influential in the U.S., especially after a major riot in New York City in 1871. Also in Canada, British nationalists opposed French Canadians from Quebec, who were expanding beyond Quebec. In Ontario (and other provinces), vigorous measures were attempted to prevent the establishment of French-language Catholic schools.

Some of you people who speak English as your second, third, or fourth language pronounce it really good. I mean, I can't notice your accent as being anything but native. They actually sound like a mix of different native accents. It makes me feel sad when I butcher the pronunciation of other languages. :(

Sorry but no..... the accent is a million miles away from mine, it is very very different, perhaps Watt Tyler would sound more like my accent, but he is further south than where i live by 35 miles or so, but he would immediately tell you where i am from without being told..:)
Osweo would have an idea too, but on the whole my accent is unique, and only Gloucester dwellers could pinpoint what part of Gloucester someone was brought up in, as the accent differs in the Gloucester city area.

Edited: maybe i should post my accent?

It's a bit too romanticised or nostalgic in its portrayal of extinct or endangered languages, but interesting to see where exactly lines are drawn.

I could, of course, chop the 'Lancashire' section into about ten further divisions without even thinking too hard about it at all, and I barely know the northern half of the county. I used to live on a road nine miles long. It had about four distinct accents. Oldham and Manchester are VERY distinct from each other. I think even a foreigner would notice this. And I barely understand people from the coastal areas, like around Billinge, if they really exaggerate their local traits.

EDIT: GOOD GODS, it shows the Northern Isles as Gaelic speaking, and PEEBLES!!!!!!! IDIOCY!!!!!

As soon as you get past Tewkesbury going north from Gloucester, the accent starts to change, at Worcester it is almost sounding like Woverhampton Brummie language, but a little softer, all in a space of 18-25 miles.
Going south from Gloucester 8 miles is Stroud there the accent is turning more countryfied, 25 miles south is Bristol....(where you be to?).....shakes head...:D

Listen to my poorly spoken English. :D Also forgive the quality of the audio. My voice is soft and my microphone is messed up. I will try to find an enhancing program. I also hesitate and omit words a lot. :( I've noticed that toward the start and end my accent is the most notable, as I have to adjust to the style of the author in the start and I am tired toward the end.

Here is the story I was reading. It is one we have read in English class and I liked it a lot so I thought I would read it.

I'm a Brummie, so imagine Shakespeare done in the original dialect (in which it all rhymes) or maybe the people of Rohan in The Lord of the Rings (though not in the films). Brummie is derived from the original West Mercian dialect of Old English, and is widely regarded as one of the most ancient and lyrical modes of speech in England. Or, if you prefer, think of Enoch Powell without the speech impediment, or Ozzy Osbourne without the alcohol-induced stutter.
