Niinistö announces presidential candidacy

http://yle.fi/ecepic/neon3/archive/00377/Sauli_Niinist__377458b.jpg

Former Speaker of Parliament Sauli Niinistö (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sauli_Niinistö) of the National Coalition Party has announced that he will stand in the 2012 presidential election.

Niinistö had been widely expected to run for president after losing to Tarja Halonen in the last presidential election, but had been coy about revealing his intentions after standing down from parliament at the last election. Earlier this month he told YLE that he had already decided whether or not he would run for president, but he refused to say what exactly he had decided.

He explained that the delay was intended to give time for the election and government formation process to run its course before he announced his intentions.

Niinistö has had two spells as Finland’s Finance Minister and one as Justice Minister, and worked for the European Investment Bank.

Pekka Haavisto will be the candidate put forward by the Green League, while the other parties will choose their candidates in the autumn.

How much power does the president have in Finland, compared to the Prime Minister?

The President's main duty in Finland is to be in charge of foreign policy.

Ever since we were burdened with the current paleo-Stalinist Moomin-Mamma from Hell almost 12 years ago, the parliament has been trying to cut back the President's authority in any way possible.

Does Suomen Sisu have any candidate :)

That would somewhat difficult, wouldn't it, since Suomen Sisu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suomen_Sisu) is not a political party, nor does it seek to become one.

I wouldn't be surprised though, if one of our members did run for president in the coming decades, through some other established part (SS has members in all other parties except the SFP (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swedish_People's_Party_of_Finland)).

.

I know, I just wondered if anyone of the PS Sisus is interested?

Well, to be fair to Tavja, that line of development started with Koivisto, let us call it post-kekkoslovakian parliamentarism. ;)

And yes, Niinistö is the next president. I can't see any serious contenders. Heinäluoma? Pfft.

Although I'm sure Väyrynen is convinced he could beat anyone, after all, he's Pave Väyrynen. ;)

Pravda did manage to make a President out of Halonen -- which is a truely amazing feat if you think about it. Compared to her, Haavisto ought to be a piece of cake in comparison -- if it still were 2000, that is, which it thankfully isn't.

I believe it is time for Finland's most Innsmouthian politician to sink back beneath the waves. :p

It's starting to look like we're still living in year 2000...:ohwell:

I puked when I read Katainen's comments.

Why did it go so well for Haavisto in Åland?

Jag vet inte! Quite weird to me too, hard to interprete - most of them actually voted for Lipponen in 1st round which is equally weird. And I think the voting % was very low now in 2nd round there. Anyways it's only around 11 000 votes if I counted correctly so not material to the election in any way.

I was laughing at how the commentators on the telly were avoiding the word "homosexual" but instead used the phrase "a man living in a registered relationship with another man" to describe Haavisto. :D

HOMO SE ON! :p

Why did it go so well for Haavisto in Åland?

Maybe they thought that since Haavisto belongs to a minority himself he would be better for the Swedish speaking minority.

But Haavisto wasn't popular at all among Swedish speakers in Ostrobothnia, he is quite unpopular here, partly because he was the Environment Minister during the implementation of Natura 2000.

I'm wondering how he'll affect immigration. Obviously, I wish to move to Finland to live with my boyfriend, so immigration laws will affect me as well.

Fuck him, I want Motorhead RememberMe to be the president of Finland.

I would immediately have 4/5 of the politicians shot, cut Finland loose from the EU and join the Mongol Empire, invade St. Kitts and Nevis, enforce a strict female dominated immigration policy with beauty as criteria and raise everyones salary.
