This thread is mainly addressed at European speakers of languages other than English, French, German, Spanish, Russian or Italian.

What are the books regarded as masterpieces in your literature? :writing_thinking:

Well, for Finnish there's this thread (http://www.theapricity.com/forum/showthread.php?t=19613).

In addition, I would nominate F. E. Sillänpää (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frans_Eemil_Sillanpää), Volter Kilpi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volter_Kilpi), Aleksis Kivi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aleksis_Kivi), Paavo Haavikko (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paavo_Haavikko), Veijo Meri (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veijo_Meri)and Minna Canth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minna_Canth).

And while he is by no means essential, my heart is warmed by the discovery that the man in my sig now has his own English Wikipedia page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arto_Salminen). :p

That's an interesting thread, Eldritch. That's my intention with the thread too. For instance, when it comes to Finnish literature, I admit I had only heard about the Kalevala. :embarrassed

Islwyn Ffowc Elis wrote Cysgog y Cryman, which was chosen as the most significant Welsh language book of the 20th century.

Saunders Lewis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saunders_Lewis) was nominated for the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1970 and is usually acknowledged as the grand-daddy of Welsh nationalism, but he was a poet/dramatist rather than a book writer.

Angharad Price is probably one of our best contemporary writers, I read O! Tyn y Gorchudd! when it was published back in 2002. It was awarded 2003 Book of the Year by the Welsh Arts Council and won the Hay Festival Welsh Language prize in 2003.

I'd pick these in Portuguese (from Portugal):

- "Crónica de El-rei D. João I" - Fernão Lopes
- "Sermão de Santo António aos Peixes" - Padre António Vieira
- "Amor de Perdição" - Camilo Castelo Branco
- "Uma Abelha na Chuva" - Carlos de Oliveira
- "Mensagem" - Fernando Pessoa
- "Os Lusíadas" - Luís de Camões
- "Os Maias" - Eça de Queirós
- "Aparição" - Vergílio Ferreira
- "Memorial do Convento" - José Saramago

- "Memorial do Convento" - José Saramago

Just finished his Ensaio sobre a cegueira. Dunno why some people criticized it so much, I've loved it.

I am not quite fluent, but these works should, nevertheless be recalled.
